Members of the Wellesley High boys tennis team led the way among the locals with four Boston Globe All-Scholastic spring sports recognitions, but plenty of other Wellesley athletes and coaches earned top honors, too.
WHS tennis boys singles players Alex Kley and Alex Novins, and doubles players Patrick Kley and Michael Ryan, were named All-Scholastics. The team made it to the Division 1 state semi-finals match.
Senior Malina Rufo of the girls’ state champion golf team was named an All-Scholastic, and coach Ken Bateman earned Coach of the Year honors.
In Outdoor Track & Field, Julia Jordahl-Henry was named an All-Scholastic winner for her high jumping exploits.
John Walton grabbed an All-Scholastic nod for his strong Volleyball season.
In baseball, Wellesley’s Michael Vasil (playing for BC High) was one of the players of the year. Wellesley High sophomore Henry Weycker was named an All-Scholastic in leading the team to its state title berth. WHS’s Rob Kane earned Coach of the Year honors in Division 1.
More Wellelsey student-athletes also earned All-Star honors (girls tennis, boys track/field, boys lacrosse).
COACHING CHANGES
Separately, Wellesley High has announced three new head coaches for the fall sports season. Cat Whitehill, a longtime member of the U.S. National Women’s Soccer team and a former professional player, has been named as the new girls’ soccer coach (a bit more from Boston Herald). Tasha Odemwingie will lead girls’ volleyball, and Tim Broe, already the boys’ cross country running coach, will head up the girls’ program as well.
