Wellesley's Wonderful Weekend

Susu Bakery in Wellesley saying bye-bye

July 7, 2017 by Deborah Brown 5 Comments

Susu, WellesleyWe were dismayed to receive the following from Suzanne Aylward, owner of Susu Bakery & Cafe, a goodbye letter as beautifully crafted as one of her many baked goods:

To my loyal customers, friends and neighbors,

As my Dad, Paul, was fond of saying, “It’s simple but it’s not easy.” Truer words were never spoken…It’s time to say goodbye to Susu Bakery and Cafe. It’s simple but it’s not easy. We’ve had some wonderful times and were fortunate to work alongside some great, talented cooks and bakers and formed life long friendships through this shop. Working alongside with my Mum and Dad, we had lots of fun and made lots of happy memories.

I’ve enjoyed watching your kids grow up and was honored to make their birthday cakes, communion cakes, graduation cakes, and even some wedding cakes.  I am humbled to have been part of your lives and memories. I will cherish that as I move on to my next chapter.

Susu Bakery will be closing it’s door on Saturday, July 15th.

Everything will be for sale – furnishings, art, pots and pans… our delicious brownies and baked goods all of next week through Saturday at our beautiful Church Square location.

Please stop by. If only so I can tell you thanks in person for the past 17 years! And as for me, sugar, butter and flour will always be in my future. We’ll be in touch!

Thank you,

Susu

We’re sorry to see you go, Susu. Thanks for the great French dinner, when you partnered with La Voile Boston Brasserie, and for the countless cups of coffee, tea, cookies, and cupcakes you kept in steady supply. All the best to you on your next venture.

I am so sorry to see SuSu Bakery/Cafe go!!! It is among my favorite places When my daughter was younger she and I went there every Friday after school to talk about her week, get treats. SuSu gave my daughter a sweet 16 British Tea party and so many special events were celebrated there. My closest friends took me treat for my birthdays as knew how I loved it. My 86 year old mother said it was the most elegant cafe she had been to since her days in Italy where she is from. I even got my next door neighbors hooked on her doughnut muffins and the boy( son ) who was 2 would go there with me regularly!

I wish SuSu “Tante belle cose!” Many beautiful things! She was a shining star for me, my friends and family!!! Merci Beaucoup for being the gracious and elegant hostess that you were whenever we came there. I will miss SuSu Bakery cafe and SuSu!!!

It’s sad to see so many businesses closing in Wellesley. Susu was a special place and will be missed in our town ( along with Blue Ginger). We all wish Suzzane well on her next chapter and thank her for the 17 years of great cooking and baking. Let’s hope more real estate offices and banks don’t take over these wonderful locations.

    Suzus embodied the essence
    Of “the Wellesley way” that
    Townies proudly used to say

She is a gem and we look forward to her next venture
    In her prime

What a loss for Wellesley! A unique neighborhood bakery offering addicting treats like Susu’s delicious donut muffins, scones, brownies, the best cherry pie ever, luscious carrot cake and more. Loved the Parisian-style décor. It was a cozy, inviting place to meet and enjoy breakfast or lunch with friends and family not to mention the high teas she hosted and the decorate your own Gingerbread house events at Christmas. Gems like Susu’s are becoming extinct. Chain coffee houses and fast food joints without charm are creating cookie-cutter towns. Very sad, indeed.

All the best to you Susu!

All the best to you, Susu, in your next exciting venture! We know that whatever that may be, it will be as creative and beautiful and sugar-butter-flour-inspired as was lovely Susu’s Bakery Boutique. We will miss that stop in our every visit to Wellesley!
