Wellesley girls fashion bracelets over summer to boost cancer research

A group of Wellesley girls has enjoyed the summer vacationing with family and going to camp, but they’ve also carved out time to help others by stitching string bracelets that they’re selling to raise funds for research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.

Avery Mather, the stringleader of this Bracelets for the Brave project, says her inspiration came from the fact that she, her sister and their pals find making friendship bracelets using macrame and other techniques to be “a super fun thing to do during summer,” plus “we like to help people.” Helping those with cancer hits home for the Mather girls, whose maternal grandmother’s cancer is in remission.

The Bracelets for the Brave campaign features a logo based on the ancient African symbol called a Tabono, which translates to strength and perseverance (the Mather girls have visited Tanzania with their family).Bracelets for the Brave

This group of 9- and 11-year-old Hunnewell, Dana Hall and Wellesley Middle School students has cranked out 100 bracelets and raised $300 through sales and donations so far, including to family, friends and those passing by the Mather home. While production could slow once school starts, the girls say they plan to continue making their colorful string wearables.

The bracelets cost $3 apiece — and no strings attached — all proceeds go to Dana-Farber. To order bracelets, you can reach out to Avery (acm2024@icloud.com) or Alden (alden05@icloud.com).
