Hellbent on finding something lively to do in Wellesley on Tuesday night, but unable to find a decent Airbnb party, I took the Wellesley Municipal Light Plant up on its offer to prowl Croton Street and Pine Street in search of new LED streetlights that the WMLP wants residents to rate. It wasn’t exactly a scavenger hunt or anything that elaborate, as the poles were clearly marked with signs and colored bands, but it got me out of the house for a bit.
The WMLP has laid out a plan to retrofit 3,100 streetlights with LEDs that it says could save taxpayers $125K annually and eliminate 930,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity. The Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources has preliminarily approved the WMLP’s bid for a grant.
But before blanketing Wellesley in LEDs, the WLMP is asking residents to venture into the night and check out marked streetlights on Croton Street and Pine Street, then provide feedback via an online survey. While on my outing, I ran into a local who noted the extremely bright light we were standing under might be better suited for a main street.
Should you have any questions or wish to provide a verbal response to the survey, please contact the WMLP at 781‐235‐7600 to speak with a member of the LED streetlight conversion team.
