Wellesley teacher will enter boxing ring to take on cancer (and another fighter)

The House of Blues, that legendary club and concert venue on Boston’s Landsdowne St., will change things up a bit on October 5. Instead of musicians taking the stage to throw down riffs, boxers will dance around a ring and connect punches as a fundraiser to knock out cancer.

One of the 32 athletes competing at the all-women Belles of the Brawl event will be Wellesley High School’s own Alice Liao, fighting under the name “Lady Liberty.” During the day Ms. Liao-Liberty teaches history, but on her off time, she’s been getting herself into peak physical condition for her three two-minute rounds in the ring.

The event is put together by Haymakers for Hope to raise money for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, among other cancer research and care institutions. Tickets to the event are going for $85 – $500.

We wish the best of luck to the two-time Wellesley Education Foundation Red Apple Award honoree.
