How not to get lost in Wellesley town forest

wellesley town forest april 2015

Wellesley’s Andrew Scherrer, who set up a permanent orienteering course at the town forest for his Boy Scout Eagle Project, is inviting anyone who would like to give the course a whirl to come on down to Longfellow Pond on Sunday from 1-3pm.

The idea will be to speed your way through the scavenger hunt-style course as quickly as possible using a map and compass.  “It’s easy to learn and a fun way to exercise your body and mind as you enjoy the outdoors. It’s a sport for everyone and beginners are always welcome,” says Scherrer, a member of Boy Scout troop 185.

Scherrer has done orienteering through the Boy Scouts to earn his Orienteering merit badge as well as on camping trips. “My troop creates and runs through multiple nightly courses every other year when we go on a week-long camping trip to Nantucket. Orienteering is a fun exercise to hone your map reading skills, and also allows you to see a part of nature you might not have considered seeing otherwise,” he says.
