Wellesley students encouraged to apply for Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club scholarships by February 1, 2018

The​ ​Wellesley​ ​Hills​ ​Junior​ ​Women’s​ ​Club​ ​(WHJWC)​ ​is accepting​ ​scholarship​ ​applications for​ ​2017-2018​ now through February 1, 2018.

In​ ​2017,​ ​the​ ​Club​ ​awarded​ ​$70,000​ ​in​ ​scholarships​ ​and​ ​awards​ ​to​ ​30​ ​Wellesley​ ​students. Scholarships​ ​were​ ​given​ ​to​ ​graduating​ ​high​ ​school​ ​seniors​ ​and​ ​undergraduate​ ​college​ ​students in amounts​ ​ranging​ ​from​ ​$1.000​ ​- ​$4,000.

Applications​ ​are​ ​evaluated​ ​based​ ​on​ ​demonstrated​ ​financial​ ​need,​ ​academic​ ​achievement,​ ​and involvement​ ​in​ ​community​ ​service.​ ​Applicants​ ​must​ ​be​ ​Wellesley​ ​residents​ ​graduating​ ​from​ ​high school​ ​in​ ​or​ ​outside​ ​of​ ​Wellesley​ ​or​ ​Wellesley​ ​residents​ ​currently​ ​attending​ ​undergraduate institutions​ ​on​ ​a​ ​full-time​ ​basis.​ ​A​ ​limited​ ​number​ ​of​ ​awards​ ​are​ ​available​ ​to​ ​Wellesley​ ​High School​ ​graduates​ ​who​ ​reside​ ​outside​ ​of​ ​Wellesley.

In​ ​addition​ ​to​ ​scholarships,​ ​the​ ​WHJWC​ ​has​ ​4​ ​named​ ​awards:

●  The​ ​Patricia​ ​C.​ ​Doiron​ ​Memorial​ ​Scholarship​​ ​recognizes​ ​a​ ​graduating​ ​senior​ ​who​ ​has shown​ ​a​ ​commitment​ ​to​ ​early​ ​childhood​ ​education​ ​through​ ​participation​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Child​ ​Lab at​ ​the​ ​Wellesley​ ​High​ ​School.

●  The​ ​Suzanne​ ​Stevens​ ​Scholarship​​ ​recognizes​ ​a​ ​graduating​ ​senior​ ​(or​ ​current​ ​college student)​ ​who​ ​has​ ​demonstrated​ ​strength​ ​when​ ​faced​ ​with​ ​adversity,​ ​while​ ​maintaining​ ​a strong​ ​academic​ ​record​ ​and​ ​involvement​ ​in​ ​community​ ​service.

●  The​ ​Wellesley​ ​Hills​ ​Junior​ ​Women’s​ ​Club​ ​and​ ​Principal’s​ ​Community​ ​Service Book​ ​Award​ ​​recognizes​ ​a​ ​graduating​ ​senior​ ​who​ ​has​ ​performed​ ​exceptional​ ​community service.

●  The​ ​Wellesley​ ​Hills​ ​Junior​ ​Women’s​ ​Club​ ​Junior​ ​Community​ ​Service​ ​Book​ ​Award recognizes​ ​a​ ​Wellesley​ ​High​ ​School​ ​Junior​ ​who​ ​has​ ​demonstrated​ ​an​ ​outstanding commitment​ ​to​ ​community​ ​service​ ​both​ ​inside​ ​and​ ​outside​ ​of​ ​Wellesley​ ​High​ ​School. This​ ​individual​ ​possesses​ ​a​ ​complete​ ​and​ ​mature​ ​understanding​ ​of,​ ​and​ ​passion​ ​for community​ ​service,​ ​regardless​ ​of​ ​their​ ​academic​ ​and​ ​financial​ ​background.

The​ ​Wellesley​ ​Hills​ ​Junior​ ​Women’s​ ​Club​ ​was​ ​established​ ​in​ ​1944​ ​as​ ​a​ ​service​ ​organization under​ ​the​ ​Massachusetts​ ​Federation​ ​of​ ​Women’s​ ​Clubs.​ ​​ ​Through​ ​its​ ​four​ ​fundraisers​ ​– Wellesley​ ​Marketplace,​ ​Luminary​ ​Night,​ ​Wellesley​ ​Kitchen​ ​and​ ​Home​ ​Tour​ ​and​ ​the​ ​5K​ ​Wonder Run​ ​–​ ​the​ ​WHJWC​ ​raises​ ​money​ ​that​ ​is​ ​donated​ ​both​ ​to​ ​local​ ​non-profits​ ​and​ ​to​ ​WHS​ ​students. In​ ​2017,​ ​WHJWC​ ​donated​ ​approximately​ ​$140,000​ ​to​ ​the​ ​community​ ​through​ ​scholarships​ ​and charitable​ ​grants​ ​to​ ​local​ ​non-profit​ ​organizations.​ ​WHJWC​ ​has​ ​awarded​ ​more​ ​than​ ​$1.5M​ ​in scholarships​ ​to​ ​students​ ​since​ ​1972.

In​ ​the​ ​last​ ​five​ ​years,​ ​WHJWC​ ​has​ ​given​ ​away​ ​almost​ ​half​ ​a​ ​million​ ​dollars.​ ​​ ​In​ ​2017,​ ​the​ ​club awarded​ ​$70,000​ ​across​ ​30​ ​grants​ ​to​ ​Wellesley​ ​and​ ​Metrowest​ ​organizations.​ ​​ ​The​ ​club donates​ ​to​ ​a​ ​variety​ ​of​ ​educational,​ ​youth,​ ​elderly,​ ​civic​ ​and​ ​community​ ​programs.​ ​​ ​Particular emphasis​ ​is​ ​placed​ ​on​ ​those​ ​programs​ ​that​ ​have​ ​a​ ​significant​ ​impact​ ​on​ ​the​ ​Wellesley community.​ ​​ ​The​ ​club​ ​recently​ ​restructured​ ​the​ ​grants​ ​process,​ ​aiming​ ​to​ ​make​ ​a​ ​greater community​ ​impact​ ​by​ ​fully​ ​funding​ ​concrete​ ​programs.
