A blizzard of wholly unprepared Wellesley shoppers storm Whole Foods

January 3, 2018 by Deborah Brown 12 Comments

Impending nor’easter — threat or menace? Both if your larder is devoid of organic meats and local eggs, and you just heard that Wellesley public schools classes and activities are called off tomorrow (Thursday, 1/4). A sharp-eyed reader sent along these pics of cleared-out shelves at Whole Foods at 2:30. This reader says, “People were double parked in the lot. One car looked like the owner just left it in the middle of the lane and ran in.”

Here at The Swellesley Report editorial offices (aka my kitchen), we’ve got Chinese Barbecued Pork going in the crock pot right now. I am ever-grateful that I hit the grocery store at 8am (she said smugly).

The hens had best spend their time productively during Thursday’s nor’easter.

And here’s that same egg case at 5:08pm:

Looks like at least some shoppers are stocking up on their veggies

Whole Foods, pre-nor'easter
It gives me such a cozy feeling inside knowing that people all over town will be making soup tomorrow.

Apparently fish isn’t a big seller for storm shopping.

Meanwhile, over at Roche Bros., the fact that all of the carriages had disappeared at 10AM on Wednesday was surely a sign of the masses descending on that grocery store (thanks to DM for sharing photo):

Actually the shelves were empty yesterday, I have never seen it like that since it’s been open? I was told by the staff that they did not get in several expected shipments so they were very low in milk, meat and eggs. I wondered if it was because of its new ownership… or maybe the weather earlier in the week?

Didn’t know that the Whole Foods shelves were empty on Tuesday as well as Wednesday. There’s always Roche Bros…

Luckily I went to Roche at 7:30 am. While it must have been “restocking Wednesday” they still had everything in stock and only 2 people in front of me at the register. Hoping we all get through the #bombcyclone with relatively little scarring!

Ah yes, with a heart soup in mind, I found the produce section at RB obliterated at the end of the day. Beyond the shopping frenzy and shoveling out , there is always the pause to take in the “sweep of easy wind and downy flake”.

I’m going to come back to that poetry after the winter has just about done me in and remember the beauty of Mr. Frost’s words, the “sweep of easy wind and downy flake.” Yes, I had to google it.

Deeply ashamed of my need to Google. Memorizing Frost canon as penance.

Your penance shall absolve you. We didn’t have Google when I was in 8th grade and memorized that poem for extra credit! 😉

What do you expect when all of us in town go grocery shopping on the same 2 days. It was crazy busy both Tuesday and Wednesday. The poor employees at both Whole Foods and Roche Bros were working so hard while getting screamed at at times by customers. As a shopper I felt horrible and actually said something to another customer yelling at an employee on Wednesday night for having empty shelves. It’s one day and we all make it seem like it’s the end of the world.

They didn’t run low on Amazon books, Amazon toys or Amazon ear buds. I don’t know why we need these things at a grocery store.

Too funny! I don’t know anything about retail, but the phrase “profit margin” pops into my head.
