After the Civil War, the thirteenth amendment to the Constitution banned slavery, “except as a punishment for crime.” DuVernay documents how this “loophole” has been used to deprive African-Americans of their rights and has led to the present day prison-industrial complex. The movie contains some graphic scenes of violence. It is appropriate for children in middle school and older.
