Stinks about the rinks

The town-sanctioned outdoor ice skating season has ended before it ever got started because the two rinks recently constructed on the basketball court near Wellesley High School have been vandalized. One of the rinks was wrecked last year, but it was fixed after a lot of work.

Wellesley Recreation Director Matt Chin called this past weekend’s vandalism “very disappointing.”

“Basically, someone removed a board or two from each rink and the water drained out and the ice that was in the rinks shifted, tearing holes in the liners,” Chin said. Fortunately, the rink system is still in good shape and will be useable in the future, he said.

The Townsman reported earlier this week that the damage wasn’t reported to the Wellesley Police.
