The 5th grade Girl Scouts troop at Hunnewell Elementary School is seeking to earn a coveted Bronze Award through a project to encourage the Wellesley community, from sports to civic groups, to forego single-serve water bottles during the weekend of April 27-29.
Troop leader Beth Cook says the girls have sent letters to the school principals and various organizations in town to make them aware of the effort. There are some limited edition car magnets available for the first 25 groups to sign up for the challenge as well.
This troop has a track record in this area. In 2016, scouts instituted a Gold Water Bottle Challenge at Hunnewell that is still going strong. Classrooms compete for the highest percentage of reusable water bottles on the first Wednesday of every month, and the winner gets a gold water bottle to display in its classroom for the month.
As you can see from current troop members in the video below, they’re not only lined up to earn a Bronze Award, but maybe an Oscar, too.
