Do the write thing in Wellesley… recycle your plastic pens, mechanical pencils, and markers

UPDATE FROM THE NRC, 7/10/18:

Hundreds of no-longer-usable markers, pens, and mechanical pencils are on their way to be recycled, thanks to the support of Wellesley residents and teachers. The NRC and the Wellesley Recycling and Disposal Facility (RDF) co-sponsored this pilot project, placing collection boxes from TerraCycle at Town Hall and in the Children’s Room at the Wellesley Free Library. Throughout June, residents dropped utensils in the boxes – with many contributions coming from students at Bates and Fiske Elementary schools. Thanks to the Wellesley Free Library for hosting a collection box.

Cleaning out classrooms or lockers at the end of school? Don’t throw away dried-up markers and pens – recycle them at Wellesley Town Hall and at the Wellesley Free Library starting Friday, June 1, 2018. 

The Natural Resources Commission is partnering with the Department of Public Works on a zero waste solution for old pens, pencils, and markers. Throw items into the specially-marked TerraCycle recycling box in the Town Hall Lobby and in the Library Children’s Room. The collection will continue until the boxes are full. TerraCycle will separate the components, smelting the metal and molding the plastic into new plastic products.

Accepted items: Pens, pen caps, mechanical pencils, markers, marker caps, permanent markers, and permanent marker caps.

Not Accepted: Wooden pencils, colored pencils, paint brushes, batteries, paint, pressurized containers, or medical sharps.
