The Wellesley High School boys’ soccer team, ranked 5th in the Division I South bracket of the playoffs, won an exciting 2-1 first-round match vs. #12 Weymouth High on Saturday afternoon at WHS. The Raiders drew a foul in the box less than 5 minutes into overtime, and junior Brendan Clare ended the match with a penalty kick over the diving keeper, as you can see in the video.
The game had been scoreless at halftime, and Wellesley had a few good chances in the final 10 minutes of regulation time to break what had become a 1-1 tie. For the Raiders, this victory was all the more sweet because Weymouth had knocked Wellesley out of the playoffs in an overtime game last fall. The Raiders now await the winner of Needham-Marshfield for their second-round playoff match.
