Thanks to Swellesley reader Brad Bernard for sharing these clippings from a 1968 edition of the Boston Herald Traveler featuring a profile of Wellesley. Fifty years later, the population of this “prestige town” isn’t much larger, though the median annual income has risen a tad from $11.4K to $172K.
The article notes that it wasn’t uncommon for someone to die and have their obit mention that they had been on the Wellesley Country Club waiting list. The town was apparently reeling from reports of Wellesley High students smoking… marijuana! In the ’60s!
If you zoom in on the article, you’ll see that Wellesley’s big problems at the time were:
- Traffic
- Parking
- Transportation
- Design
- Taxes
- Construction
Now where have we heard about those issues of late?
