The Wellesley Municipal Light Plant (MLP) Board on January 28 accepted the resignation of long-time Director Dick Joyce, effective July 31, 2019. Joyce started in Wellesley in March 1995 at a time when the separation of the MLP from the Department of Public Works was extremely controversial. Joyce was brought in at that transition time to manage the MLP on a daily basis and to address the frequent power outage and system reliability issues of that time.
The MLP Board will use executive search firm Mycoff, Fry & Prouse to find a replacement Director, along with a search committee consisting of MLP’s Assistant Director Debra Healy; two members from the Light Board, Dave Donohue and Jack Stewart; former Light Board member Tom Peisch; former Selectmen Gig Babson; and current Selectmen and Sustainable Energy Committee member Tom Ulfelder. The committee is also looking into adding another resident with an interest in sustainability.
Dick’s always kept a low profile in his 24 years on the job, so much so that we don’t even have a file photo to include for this post. “My preference has always been and remains not to draw attention to myself…” Dick said in an email.
We wish Dick well as he spends the several months wrapping things up here and as he heads into the next chapter of his life.

Wow……not the least bit surprised at the size of the team set up for searching for a replacement for Dick Joyce! He has been such a hard working, dedicated Director of our MLP that the search won’t be an easy task, I suspect! We’ve been spoiled by his professionalism and sincere commitment to all of us!
