Wellesley Free Library has put out a call for community assistance in solving a disturbing mystery: 7 out of 8 round tree slices that had been stashed at the Fells Branch Library to use as outdoor seating at the new children’s garden have disappeared.
Now it’s not like you can’t go to just about neighborhood in Wellesley to find a chopped down tree these days, but apparently the stumps (or more technically, rounds) at the library branch were easy pickings.
The library posted on its Facebook page: “The Mystery of the Missing Tree Stumps: That may sound like the title of a library book, but the Fells Branch Library has a real mystery to be solved… It took a lot of sweat equity by library staff and volunteers to move the stumps to Fells on May 1. Sadly, by May 4, they were gone.
Perhaps the tree stumps will be returned as suddenly as they disappeared. If you have any information about this mystery, please contact the Wellesley Police Dept.”
Offers, including from Wellesley Conservation Council, have already begun trickling in to replace the stumps.
It’s the biggest library mystery since Mr. & Mrs. Swellesley sought to recover books accidentally left at the dump.

Bridget Strous says
I think this is an absolutely shameful thing to happen in Wellesley. I did not pay $2 million dollars on a cottage where these shenanigans take place. Please use all the resources available to find the culprits at once.
