Wellesley’s oldest resident in need of financial assistance

Usually Wellesley’s oldest resident, Herlda Senhouse, celebrates her birthday at her comfortable Glen Grove home, surrounded by friends and family. But when she turned 113 last February, Herlda was in the hospital, recovering from an illness. That change of venue didn’t stop over 50 guests from making the trek to sing “Happy birthday” and eat cake with the star of the day, such is the extensive support system devoted to Herlda.

Herlda’s recovery turned out to be the easy part. The hard part was that she couldn’t go back o her familiar surroundings until health care assistants were in place to ensure that her needs would be met. And that cost more than Herlda could afford. Her community stepped in to fundraise, and came up with over $10k, but six months later, that cushion has been nearly depleted.

So two of her friends, Wellesley residents Robert Alevizos and Margaret Robinson, are once again spearheading efforts to ask for donations to help with financial assistance. Funds will go to pay for the daily health care assistants needed to keep Herlda in her home as long as possible. Insurance covers some of her care, but not all.

Herlda receives regular medical care from her doctors, as well as daily assistance with her needs from local social workers, her family, friends, and church.
