The program includes:

  • The overture to Giuseppe Verdi's opera: La Forza del Destino (The Power of Fate.)  The opera is a tale of star-crossed lovers, a tragic accident, a vengeful son and, of course, a muleteer.
  • Beethoven’s journal entry recommitting his aspirations to prevail despite the inevitability of fate inspired Carlos Simon’s “Fate Now Conquers.”
  • Charles Ives composed “The Unanswered Question” as a dialogue between a solo trumpet continually posing “The Perennial Question of Existence” as the woodwinds, ever more exasperated, attempt to answer.
  • Cindy McTee’s “The Unquestioned Answer” continues Ives’ questioning melody throughout the orchestra with the idea that disparate musical elements can not only coexist but also illuminate and complement one another.
  • Symphony No. 12 by Dmitri Shostakovich. A controversial composer, Shostakovich successfully navigated the confounding expectations of twentieth century Soviet Russia. The symphony was dedicated to Vladimir Lenin and depicts the Russian Revolution. This hugely powerful work showcases a large orchestra with Shostakovic’s skill as a composer for film and stage.
