Massive Meadmore sculpture is back at Wellesley College after a good scrubbing

The 1,500-pound steel sculpture by Clement Meadmore, removed from the campus of Wellesley College and sent out for cleaning last July, has made its triumphant return. We happened upon the re-installation during a mid-day walk earlier this week.

The striking piece was first installed in 2012 in front of the campus’ garage, across the street from Alumnae Hall.

Titled “Upsurge,” the minimalist artwork was donated by rich alumnae and Trustee Emerita of the College, Lynn Johnston ’64, and her husband.

More on “Upsurge” here.

Clement Meadmore’s monumental steel sculpture Upsurge. Characteristic for its fusion of geometry and fluidity, the work—which stands 20 x 13 x 8 feet and weighs nearly 1500 pounds—is sited between Diana Chapman Walsh Alumnae Hall and the Davis Parking Facility, on a small curved grassy landscape feature located near the College’s Route 135 main entrance. The sculpture was installed on Friday, April 13, 2012. The Swellesley Report file photo, July 2023.
