Wellesley High girls’ volleyball runs win streak to 4

The Wellesley High School girls’ volleyball team was “digging pink’ during warm-ups for its game vs. Braintree High on Tuesday to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and a crowd of younger players in pink added to the noise and spirit in the gym.

Switching over to their black uniforms for the game, the Raiders put their focus on beating Braintree, which they did by a 3-1 score.

The teams swapped points in game one until Wellesley edged ahead 9-8, only to see Braintree swing to an 11-10 lead. From there, the Raiders took the lead and kept it, but not without Braintree on its heels throughout. The Raiders jumped out to an 8-1 lead, and then stretched that to 15-5 and 22-7 before Braintree fought back and fell short. Braintree kept some of that momentum going to win game three, but the Raiders recomposed themselves and took the final game with strong serving, sets, and frontline play.

Wellesley now has a 7-5 record, while Braintree dropped to 8-6. Next up for the Raiders: Away matches vs. North Middlesex and Newton North.
