Blank Street coffee targets Wellesley Square for new shop

March 31, 2025 by Bob Brown

Blank Street, which has dozens of coffee shops across the U.K. and eastern U.S., is planning to open a spot in Wellesley Square in between Wasik’s Cheese Shop and J.P. Licks at 61A Central St.

Wolfers Lighting had previously operated in this space, which is diagonally across from Starbucks and just down the block from the former Peets Coffee location that now houses a bank.

Blank Street has some general signage in the storefront window.

Blank Street

We reached out to Blank Street last month to learn more about its plans, but that so far has drawn a… blank. We’ve tried again and will update this post if we hear back.

What we are hearing is that the chain does have to address the town’s standard grease trap challenge as all food service businesses must. It’s more daunting when a space was not previously used for food service.

According to Blank Street’s website, the business launched in 2020 as a coffee cart in Brooklyn. In addition to coffee, Blank Street offers, tea, baked goods, and other offerings. The business has been expanding quickly.

In the venture-backed outfit’s marketing pitch, they tout affordable prices, top-of-the-line coffee, and good pay for employees.

Blank Street debuted in Boston in Beacon Hill in 2022, and has been expanding its Massachusetts presence.

Been to a Blank Street Coffee shop and have some thoughts? (As non-coffee drinkers, we admit this isn’t our area of expertise). Feel free to comment on this post.

A big thank you to a Swellesley reader who let us know the sign was up. We appreciate all the eyes and ears out there, and welcome news tips at theswellesleyreport@gmail.com

Jeje’s is the best coffeehouse anywhere close by. The next closest place with good coffee might be as far as George Howell’s in Newton.

This is a nice addition to town, but I favor Jeje’s (down by the main fire station / marathon sports in Wellesley Hills) for locally fresh roasted coffee – and tasty pastries.

I noticed (and tried) the new Blank Street Coffee in Harvard Square, just steps away from the (still under reconstruction) Out of Town news kiosk. Blank Street Coffee is a nice, clean, little coffee shop. I think it replaced a major brand name coffee store in that location! Blank Street’s cappuccino was excellent. [Kept me awake for a movie at The Brattle Theatre! ;]
