Former Wellesley High teacher and coach Dick Heller passes away

May 4, 2025 by admin

Readers have called our attention to the passing of Howard Richard “Dick” Heller, a longtime figure in the Wellesley Public Schools system as a teacher, coach, and computer repair technician. Mr. Heller, an Army veteran, died on April 26 in Marlborough, according to his formal obituary.

The obituary reads in part: “Dick was hired straight from college to the Wellesley schools before being drafted. He came back to teach middle school health and physical education, and retired as the computer repair technician of the full Wellesley public school district.”

Also: “At Wellesley High School, he coached girls varsity softball, soccer, and basketball. His soccer team won a state title in 1996. Dick was named Coach of the Year by the Boston Globe, and was entered into the Massachusetts State Soccer Association Hall of Fame in 2009.”

Mr. Heller is survived by his wife, Claudia, his sons, and grandchildren. A memorial service was held on May 3.

Loved Dick. Helped me with my Macs for many years. A great gentleman. Great teacher and coach.
