Wellesley’s Linden Square gets yarn bombed

May 14, 2025 by Bob Brown

Wellesley’s already vibrant Linden Square courtyard has been given an extra color boost thanks to the handiwork of knitters and crocheters under the guidance of the Art Wellesley outfit.

Art Wellesley this past winter hosted a series of knitting and crochet classes at the library, knitting and crochet circles at area restaurants and private homes, and knitting classes at the high school—leading up to a community yarn bomb event installed on May 14 and that will be up until May 30.

Art Wellesley will formally celebrate the public display as part of the Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend activities this coming weekend. From noon-2pm on Saturday, May 17, the public is invited to stop by, enjoy music from Some Assembly Required, weather permitting. Feel free to bring your yarn and knit or crochet while there.

“We discovered yarn bombing while we were researching community art projects. It seems like a beautiful, vibrant way to energise a public space. I’m a colour lover, so it was especially appealing to me,” says Art Wellesley’s Annie Newman.

“All of this felt like a good old-fashioned quilting bee. People of all ages working together to create this community project. We engaged at least 150 people and the project includes over 300 11-in. samplers,” she says.

Depending upon how the knitted material survives the weather, the display might be exhibited elsewhere in the future. “If it doesn’t fare well, we plan to share the blankets with an animal shelter,” Newman says.

Premier Yarns, Linden Square, First Byte Designs, the Wellesley Free Library, the Wellesley Cultural Council and the Community Fund for Wellesley supported this project.

It was a fun project, glad that I and my company First Byte Designs were able to be involved.
