To the editor,
Earlier this year, the School Committee approved a budget that significantly reduced mental health support across the WPS district, citing the inability to secure approximately $40,000 needed to maintain current levels of school psychologists and counselors.
Now, just a few months later, the Committee is considering a proposal to approve a 3% salary increase for non-union positions—primarily administrative roles—effective July 1, 2025. This increase would cost more than ten times the amount needed to preserve essential mental health services for our students.
This is deeply troubling. How is it that we couldn’t find $40,000 to support the mental health and well-being of our students, yet we can allocate hundreds of thousands for administrative raises? Why are we being forced to choose between student support and administrative compensation? Why can’t we prioritize both?
It is also concerning that this proposal is being introduced at the end of the school year—when families and staff are less likely to be engaged—potentially limiting public scrutiny and input.
Our students deserve better. Mental health is not a luxury—it is a necessity. I urge the School Committee to reconsider its priorities and ensure that the well-being of our students remains at the forefront of every decision.
The public has an opportunity to weigh in at the upcoming School Committee meeting on June 10. I encourage all concerned community members to attend, speak up, and advocate for the support our students need and deserve.
Sincerely,
Sara Townsend
