Obituary: Edwina ‘Dwin’ Woodman Schuler—Made impact in big and small ways

Edwina Woodman Schuler died peacefully at home in Wellesley on July 10, 2025 at age 98. “Dwin” was born an only child to John Edwin and Grace Woodman in Springfield, MA in 1927. She moved to Wellesley in 1942, when her mother inherited a sum of money to build a home on Kirkland Circle.

She attended Wellesley Public Schools and graduated from Middlebury College in 1949. Her years at Middlebury shaped her, and she was determined and thrilled to attend her 75th class reunion in June of 2024. She earned her Master of Education from Northeastern University night school in 1971.

After 63 years with her beloved late husband John G. Schuler on Emerson Road in Wellesley, Dwin orchestrated a move to Waterstone of Wellesley in 2017, where she and John enjoyed the last “downsized” chapter of their lives together immensely.

First and foremost a loyal, loving, and supportive wife and mother, Dwin’s dream from the time she was a little girl was to get married and raise a big, happy family. Her Yankee sensibility to make things last, to stretch a buck, and to re-calibrate one’s need for “material” things always served her and the whole family well. Frugal and disciplined yet generous and forward thinking…Dwin took care of business and made things happen!

A huge personality in a tiny body, Dwin was most recently known as the “energizer bunny” at Waterstone. Throughout her life she seemed to be in perpetual motion…always engaging with a smile…often planning, organizing, or volunteering to make a positive impact in big and small ways in the lives of people around her.

An active member of the Wellesley Hills Congregational Church, Dwin was also a proud member of the South Brooksville United Methodist Church in Maine. She has a long history of singing joyously in both church choirs. She was a challenge level square dancer, co-pilot on her husband John’s various antique car tours, educated world traveler, passionate foodie, and lover of boating and co-captaining on the Penobscot Bay in Maine for over 50 Summers. Dwin never shied away from fun and adventure. An outspoken liberal Democrat, Dwin always worked hard to be open-minded. She was actively involved in the League of Women Voters in Wellesley throughout the 1960’s and was last seen on her rollator waving a sign at the Hand’s Off rally in Wellesley in April of 2025. Dwin was instrumental in founding Wellesley’s first day care center, The Children’s Center at Wellesley College in 1971.

Dwin is survived by her son Ed and wife Jody of Columbia, SC, her son Peter and wife Sue of Westwood, MA, her daughter-in-law Meredith of Harrisburg, PA, her daughter Phyllis and husband Les of Brighton, MA, along with seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was predeceased by 2 sons; Dana in 1959 and Matthew in 2022. A celebration of Dwin’s fun-filled, fabulous life will be held at the Hills Congregational Church in Wellesley, MA on Saturday, July 26th at 11 AM.
