With most Wellesley High School fall sports taking place outside of the school, the general public may yet to have noticed a serious interior decorating update in the gym: All new banners for the school’s 65 state champion athletic teams.
The previous banners were not only outdated, but incomplete. Now the banners are hung in order, though not without logistical challenges in positioning them around the scoreboard and other obstacles (I probably could have used a drone to record them all in a video, but I took a shot manually as seen below).
Seeing the banners in order helps to tell a story.
For example, who knew two of Wellesley High’s first three state titles were in boys gymnastics? (The Wellesley High gymnastics team has almost entirely had girl members in recent years.)
And that the school won no state titles in the 1960s?
In recent years, girls indoor and outdoor track as well as swim and dive have dominated, and in 2025 so far the girls’ outdoor track, golf and tennis teams all have taken home state titles. It’s been five years since a boys team won a state title (indoor track), though co-ed sailing won in 2022.
Wellesley Assistant Athletic Director Chris McGrath says the banners have been well received: “Our students have especially commented on them positively,” he says.
