Wellesley High sports: Boys soccer tops Natick, girls volleyball sweeps Milton; Girls soccer ranked #3 in country
The latest Wellesley, Mass., sports news:
Boys soccer tops Natick, girls volleyball sweeps Milton
We swung by the high school on Thursday to catch some local sports action, and the results were great.
The boys soccer team topped Natick at home by a 2-0 score, with junior Cooper Munru putting the Raiders on top about 10 minutes into the game on a rebound after Enzo Desviat Ruiz carried the ball strongly down the right sideline to initiate the opportunity. Wellesley took advantage of a goal keeper miscue that led to a free kick and insurance goal by Kurt Marten with less than 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The teams swapped plenty of opportunities throughout the second half, but Wellesley held onto the lead to run its record to 3-1-1.

Meanwhile, the game behind the game was taking place in the bleachers, where oak trees (and maybe squirrels) showered acorns on spectators, creating a pop-pop-pop soundtrack to the game in sync with nail guns being used on a home construction project on the other side of the field.

We only caught the tail end of the girls’ volleyball match in which they beat Milton High 3-0, prevailing in a tight third game for the win. The Raiders have rolled off four straight wins, and stand at 5-2 for the season. Last year the Raiders were 3-4 at this point in the season, and finished 9-9. Their next match is Sept. 25 at Needham.
Wellesley Athletic Director John Brown said it’s been fun watching the Raiders get better game to game.

Girls soccer ranked #3 in country
The Wellesley High School girls soccer team, coming off its Division 1 state title last fall, is ranked #3 in the country. The Raiders are off to a 4-0-1 start this year; the team tied an always tough Natick squad 0-0 this week on the road.
