Wellesley Athlete of the Week: Girls’ basketball’s Maria Gianarikas

January 23, 2026 by admin

Wellesley Athlete of the Week is made possible with sponsorship support from Deland, Gibson Insurance. The family-owned and operated business has carried on this Wellesley tradition for over 30 years.

Athlete of the Week: Maria Gianarikas

Maria G basketball

Sport/position: Basketball/point guard

When & how you got involved in basketball: When I was in 3rd grade my parents signed me up for Wellesley hoops and ive been playing ever since.

What you love most about basketball: The relationships I’ve built with teammates and the competitive nature of the game.

Pre-game routine: Before every game I drink a smoothie and take 3 deep breaths.

Top goal for this season: To have a fun season and work on getting everyone better.

Thoughts about this year’s team: We’ve been doing a great job despite a very tough schedule, and it hasn’t stopped us from continuing to fight. Everyone brings strong energy and talent to the team, which makes us better every day.

An accomplishment that you’re especially proud of: I’m very proud to have been nominated as a junior captain. I’ve worked extremely hard, and I’m grateful to see that effort paying off.

A funny or inspiring story related to your involvement with this team: We were down by like 30 points and Kaitlyn hit a half court buzzer beater and everyone went nuts.

Interests outside of basketball: Hanging out with family and friends, traveling, going to the beach.

Coach Glen Magpiong on Maria Gianarikas: “Maria, along with her Co-Captain, Lily Andrews, has been a terrific leader this year. We are a very young team and Maria has not only led by example with her play, but more importantly, she has been a very encouraging influence with her teammates, both on and off the court.  Statistically, Maria leads us in scoring and assists and is 2nd in rebounding. Despite not winning as many games as we might have hoped for, the vibe in the gym seems to be one of positiveness and that stems from the leadership Maria (and Lily) have exhibited.”

    she is terrific!
i enjoyed a recent Friday home game and noticed how “at ease” she is with the ball.
she stood out the most to me as a first time viewer. it was a pleasure to see.

cheers. thanks to the team and, of course, thanks to all of the dedicated coaches!
