Wellesley Toy Shop closes after 32 years in business

January 4, 2026 by Bob Brown

Wellesley Toy Shop has closed its business in Wellesley Square after 32 years of supplying area kids and kids at heart with the latest and classic toys.

Even Elmo was a regular at the store, or at least during Wellesley’ Square’s Holiday Stroll.

The shop, at 59 Central St., posted a message on its storefront thanking customers, employees, and its landlord.

Tributes to owner Andy Brown, his staff, and the shop have been pouring in.

Alicia Talanian wrote: “Andy and his team were such a constant in Wellesley Square. Such strong supporters of Wellesley kids—He set up a table for my son to sign and sell his self published book during July Jubilation and carried his Bitcoin book all year—refusing to keep a profit. Downtown Wellesley will never be the same.”

Cynthia Sheppard commented on this post: “Very sad indeed. Online shopping has really taken a toll on local communities. Another wonderful toy store in Concord went out of business several years ago as well. We must shop local while we can! It matters!”

Wellesley Toy Shop shifted into its now shuttered space about 10 years ago after the related Wellesley Gift Shop closed.

One silver lining is that the Toy Shop has established a partnership with Learning Express of Needham. You can redeem any Wellesley Toy Shop gift cards you have on hand at the Learning Express store.

Running independent retail businesses has become increasingly challenging with the rise of online shopping, but here’s hoping another original will fill that space.

Such a sad day for all of us! The Toy Shop was a beloved destination for my children, especially the Brio train table. Thank you Andy (and your mom) for so many wonderful toys and memories.

Sorry to hear. Really wish they had been able to keep going. Always thought they were a great example of what a difference having good people and amazing customer service makes. My family and I loved the shop. Very grateful to Andy and those he worked with.

How very sad! The Toy Shop is one of the last small retailers that kept our downtown unique and fun to walk through. I hope that the store space is not filled with some national chain store.

So sad to see this. Andy and his wonderful mom, and the other employees were such friendly, helpful, welcoming people. Wish them the best and, if Andy opens another shop somewhere, hope we’ll hear about it!

    GO EAGLES,

We loved shopping there for so many years. Our kids spent their allowances there countless times. Kudos to Andy for running a great independent business that made Wellesley a better town. We will miss Wellesley Toy Shop.

We will miss the Wellesley Toy Shop and the great people who ran it. When we walked down Central Street with our little ones, we always made a stop there and received a warm hello, which we cherished. Thanks SO MUCH to them for years of wonderful community spirit, the kindest ever interactions with Wellesley families, and of course great toys which helped us all mark birthdays and other milestones and which to this very day fill countless Wellesley homes to the brim. Hope the next step will find this incomparable group staying in our commercial community, and we hope we will hear where they land. We wish them and their loved ones good health and all the best in the next move. You have made a difference, and it has meant so much.

This is so sad to read. I always loved shopping there for my boys when they were little. Thank you Andy for all the years!
