Floating beach wheelchair makes Morses Pond in Wellesley more accessible

The Wellesley Recreation Department this week received a floating beach wheelchair that is now available to Morses Pond users on a first-come, first-served basis. Nonprofit SMILE Mass (Small Miracles in Life Exist) donated the equipment through a grant secured by Rec’s Jenn Lawlor.
The wheelchair is designed to give those season pass and day pass holders with disabilities a new option for enjoying the beach. The Mobi-chair has a mesh seat with three positions, a safety harness, and tether. Its pontoons allow the chair to float, and large rubber wheels make it easy to roll over sand and rocks.
A couple of Morses Pond lifeguards took the chair out for spin, and all lifeguards and Recreation Department staff will be trained to use the wheelchair and supervise anyone using it.
