Wellesley Square took on a vibrant pedestrian festival air all day Saturday for the annual July Jubilation sidewalk sale. Sponsored by the Wellesley Square Merchants’ Association, the high-summer event brought high-level energy to the shopping and dining district, drawing residents and visitors from miles around to celebrate community and shopping local.
Whether it was the thrill of the dunk tank, the live music provided by a DJ at one end of the Square, and live music by Wellesley Rocks at the other end, or the simple joy of strolling up and down a car-free Central Street, July Jubilation once again proved why it is a must-attend community event.

The very instant Wellesley Police officially closed Central Street to traffic, July Jubilation kicked into action. Dozens of Wellesley Square Merchants’ Association’s 60+ members Merchants set up their deeply discounted wares under tents to shade their customers. Food trucks got cooking. The bouncy house was inflated. And entertainers warmed up. Visitors started trickling in at 10am, and within the hour the event was in full swing.
We didn’t spy any Select Board members in attendance, but it was nice of them to approve free parking at all 2-hour street meters throughout Joobs.
We’ve been trying to get people to call July Jubilation “Joobs.” Like Gretchen, who famously tried to make “fetch” happen, “Joobs” didn’t happen for us.
Never mind about the “Joobs” thing. What did happen was music, the Bubble Zone, face painting, the dunk tank, and so much more. See you next year at—ok, fine—July Jubilation.
