Wellesley Public Schools is elevating Assistant Athletic Director Chris McGrath to interim director on Nov. 1 so that he can step in when longtime Athletic Director John Brown retires at the end of October. Brown, who has served as athletic director for the past 20 years, announced in spring that he planned to step down in the fall.

Wellesley High School Principal Jamie Chisum, who announced the McGrath move, said the district had conducted an extensive search for a permanent athletic director during the spring but did not come up with a full-time replacement for Brown. It will try again in early 2027.
McGrath, who has been the assistant director in Wellesley for the past four years, will lead the department through the end of the next school year.
Previously, McGrath was director of athletics for Northbridge Public Schools and before that that he served as the assistant athletic director for Medfield Public Schools.
McGrath has also been instrumental in supporting Swellesley’s Athlete of the Week profiles.
