Takeaways from latest Wellesley Library Board of Trustees meeting

August 14, 2026 by Bob Brown

A handful of noteworthy items from the Aug. 11 Wellesley Library Board of Trustees meeting (you can watch a recording of the nearly hour-long meeting on Wellesley Media).

  • The Wellesley Free Library’s community cookbook is now available to browse and borrow. Members of the public were invited to submit their recipes. Three copies are being made available at the main branch.
  • A seed library debuts this month as part of the Library of Things, with patrons able to borrow seeds and expected to return new seeds from their crop.
  • Following renovation of the Hills branch, which is currently closed, an opening party will be held on Sept. 30 and whose attendees will largely include library stewards, such as from the trustees,  the Wellesley Free Library Foundation, and Friends of Wellesley Free Libraries. The library director says the interior renovations, including a mural, are on track, and that a grand opening celebration is planned for Oct. 6 from 5-7pm.
  • Parking lot construction at the main branch is in full swing, with plans for it to continue through mid-September. Arrangements have been made for 20 spaces to be available in the Cameron Street lot through August. There may be some early closing dates in September to accommodate paving work.
  • The Wellesley Free Library Foundation alternates on a yearly basis between holding its Gala and Books in Bloom fundraising events. The Gala took place in April, so next up is Books in Bloom in May, where books are brought to larger life through floral arrangements and artistic expression. Events will take place on the weekend beginning May 7 (Mother’s Day weekend).
  • Serial Wellesley volunteer Tripp Sheehan is the new president of the Wellesley Free Library Foundation.
  • The Board of Trustees discussed how an HVAC overhaul for the 20-plus-year-old library might fit into the town’s capital plans and what role the board would have in helping to move such a project ahead. A recent presentation from the Facilities & Maintenance Department listed a multimillion HVAC renovation on which construction could start in 2031. Reliable HVAC is important for the library, for among other reasons, that it serves as a central cooling station in town.
