Browsealoud service added to Town website, financed by Fund for Wellesley

September 27, 2017 by admin Leave a Comment

Browsealoud, WellesleyThe Town of Wellesley, aided by a Fund for Wellesley grant, has added speech, reading and translation support to the town’s website with Browsealoud. This innovative tool from Texthelp helps the millions of people who struggle to access and understand information online.

Browsealoud works by reading website content out loud in a natural-sounding voice. It can translate web pages into 99 languages and read the content aloud in 40 of the most commonly spoken languages in the world.

To access Browsealoud, go to the Town of Wellesley website and click the white, circular launchpad in the upper right-hand corner to launch the Browsealoud toolbar. All you do is hover your mouse over any text to hear it read aloud. From a touchscreen device you’ll have to click on the text to hear it.

Now, check out the translation feature – Browsealoud can translate our website into 99 languages and read 40 of the most commonly spoken languages out loud.

Browsealoud makes web content much more accessible and usable by everyone. This addition to the town’s website reflects Wellesley’s commitment to accessibility and inclusion for all.

Adding Browsealoud to www.wellesleyma.gov was made possible by a grant from The Fund for Wellesley, an Endowed Fund of the Foundation for MetroWest. This Fund serves as a permanent source of funding to foster innovation and collaboration in support of community needs and opportunities. The mission of The Fund for Wellesley is to promote the common good and to benefit all residents of the town. For more information, visit www.thefundforwellesley.org.

June 21, 2017 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

The Fund for Wellesley, an endowed fund of the Foundation for MetroWest that’s been around since 2008, says it has distributed over $30,000 to seven local nonprofit organizations in the areas of community building and civic engagement, and youth development and opportunity.

2017 Grantees:

Wellesley Scholarship Foundation: To support development of an online Town Common Scholarship and Financial Aid Application in a smart fillable PDF format.

Wellesley Information Technology Department:  To support adding Texthelp’s Browsealoud service — which helps make websites more accessible with easy speech, reading, and translation tools — to the Town’s website.

Wellesley Recreation Department: To support the Town’s first-ever Family Campout, at which families can come together to enjoy an eco-friendly evening of games, a camp fire, and a variety of educational experiences.

Special Olympics Massachusetts:  To support Wellesley High School’s Unified Champion School track program, bringing students with and without intellectual/developmental disabilities together.

Wellesley Choral Society: To enhance the social engagement of seniors through attendance at and participation in the Society’s concerts (funded through the Al Robinson Fund for the Arts).

OUT Metrowest: To support the Wellesley meetings of the Umbrella program, which provide a safe space for teens to connect with transgender and gender non-conforming peers and adult mentors.

Wellesley Friendly Aid:  To support Wellesley Connects, an all-volunteer college mentoring program, in its second year at Wellesley High School.
