Wellesley Business Buzz: YogaSix is back; Call them Pressed; Chamber to connect in Linden Square; Room for 1 more realtor

August 17, 2022 by Bob Brown

The latest Wellesley, Mass., business news:

YogaSix is back

yogasixYogaSix, which in early 2020 planned to move into the wellness strip of Linden Square alongside the likes of Club Pilates, ended its plans later that year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic’s rise.

But now we see that YogaSix is ready to give Linden Square and Wellesley another go, squeezing in between Club Pilates and Luxotic Nails.

It’s a new team bringing YogaSix to Wellesley. Construction will start any day now, and if all goes well (supply chains…), the studio could be open as soon as late fall.

Call them Pressed

If you haven’t noticed, Pressed Juicery, which has had a location in Linden Square since 2017, has dropped the “Juicery” from its name. Call them Pressed now, as the newish signs say.

The company actually rebranded about a year ago, but it can take time for signs to catch up.

Not that the business isn’t still pumping out juice. But the name change signals that they sell other plant-based stuff too, including smoothies and freezes.

The company emphasizes in its marketing material all the good it is doing for the world, reducing its use of bad plastic and working plenty of imperfect fruits and vegetables into its mix.

Room for 1 more realtor

Wellesley automotive shop to donate wheels to a family in need

Haskin’s Automotive, a family-owned and operated collision and automotive center at 467 Washington St. in Wellesley, will hold its first-ever “Recycled Ride” event on Thursday, July 25, 1pm. The local business is donating a car to a MetroWest family in need as part of the National Auto Body Council’s “Recycled Rides” program. Haskins worked with Geico Insurance and the non-profit organization Family Promise MetroWest  to find, repair, title and service a used car that will go to a family in Marlborough with transportation challenges.

It’s been too divine, darling

Divine Design & Build, WellesleyDivine Design & Build is in the process of closing down its Linden Square location. Going forward, the one-stop design and remodeling services company will operate exclusively out of one office and and showroom at 2 Battery Wharf in Boston. Divine has been in Wellesley since 2010, putting together kitchens, baths, additions and whole house remodeling with an integrated team of in-house architects, designers and professional builders.

One of their designers, Amany Hanna, has decided not to follow the company into the city and instead will set up her own design studio nearby under the name of Amany Design Studio.

Fitness boutiques to move right into Wellesley’s core

The XPonential Fitness brand is bringing Club Pilates and StretchLab into Linden Square by the end of 2019. Construction is going full tilt in the units between Bach to Rock and Luxotic Nail Bar, where Studios Fitness & Dance used to reside before moving across Linden Street.

To celebrate, Club Pilates is giving the first 50 new members 20% off membership FOREVER. Not ready for that kind of commitment? No problem, you can try out a free class and see if working toward a stronger core is really for you. StretchLab also has deals for early adopters.

And if you’re looking to work at Club Pilates, they’re hiring a General Manager and instructors. You can contact them at wellesley@clubpilates.com

The husband and wife team of George Spowart and Soosie Lazenby are opening the StretchLab studio at 200B Linden Street this winter. They have backgrounds in marketing and sports industries. Their “flexologists” will work with you in one-on-one and in small groups on deep stretching to help decrease pain and lower the risk of injury. StretchLab started in Venice, Calif., and has franchises across the country.

Wellesley businesses that came & went in 2016

February 13, 2017 by Bob Brown

All of Wellesley’s shopping hotspots, from Linden Square to Wellesley Square to Church Square to Wellesley Hills underwent big changes in 2016. Here’s a look back, and ahead:

On the food front, Boloco bid farewell after 4 years next to the fire station in Wellesley Square, and opened the door for BFF b.good to take its place in early 2017.

Wellesley b.good

Caffe Nero replaced an art gallery and dry cleaner at the historic Wellesley Hills train station. The former La Riviera cafe spot in Wellesley Hills remained unoccupied, though speculation swirled about a bank moving in. (Century Bank also moved its location from Wellesley Square to Wellesley Hills, and Webster Bank swooped in to take over the old Citibank space on Central Street.)

Thirst Juice got the healthy juice game started on Grove Street, becoming the first retail client to fill a space at the Belclare complex. Fellow juice & more company Cocobeet (which like Thirst Juice has a Boston location too) opened in early 2017 at the former Wellesley Toy Shop space (and don’t worry Wellesley Toy Shop just moved next door).

Yogurtology goes dark in Wellesley Square
Yogurtology goes dark

Yogurtology melted down late in 2016, leaving an opening next door to Old School Pizzeria in Wellesley Square. And speaking of pizza, Cook’s Window Pizza slid into the storefront previously occupied by Wellesley Hills House of Pizza.

Ace Hardware’s departure from Linden Square was among the more notable closings during 2016, especially since Talbots is slated to leave Wellesley Square and take over that space in 2017. It should be interesting to see what replaces Talbots, along with fellow clothing store Chico’s, in Wellesley Square this year.

Also on the fashion front, Alex and Ani departed Wellesley Square, paving the way for a real estate firm to move in. The Turnabout Shoppe closed after 25 years in town, making way for consignment shop Closet Exchange over near Truly Yogurt.

There remains no shortage of beauty places in town. The Be Styled hair drying salon breezed out of Wellesley Square, only to be quickly replaced by beauty boutique Mane + Mani. Luxotic Nails Bar and Bluemercury moved in to Linden Square, Beauti Lux Spa replaced LittleBits Toys, Privi salon replaced The Color Studio in Wellesley Square, and an eyebrow threading salon slid in to the former Your French Gift shop in Wellesley Hills.

A Be Styled customer gets done up

The Haberdashery and NRO Kids quietly left Church Square, but that shopping area gained a couple of lively new stores, Xylem and Alba Boutique, to complement existing shops such as Cachet and Terrazza.

While on the subject of gift shops, Cafe Mangal-affiliated Muna Gifts closed up its Wellesley Square space early in 2016 (some gift items can still be purchased through the restaurant) and was replaced by the returning dress designer Anna Nieman.  The Sundry Spot popped up in Linden Square offering curated gift services. And if the gift of music is more your style, Bach to Rock opened up for music lessons in Linden Square, too.

Big spaces remain unfilled at the Belclare complex on Washington Street and Grove Street, along with the old City Sports location. If all this has worn you out, then you might want to head over to Naturepedic, an organic bedding store in the Whole Foods plaza that recently replaced the now-defunct The Clean Bedroom store, or Mattress Firm, the new version of Sleepy’s in Linden Square.

10 things that happened in Wellesley over the summer

August 30, 2016 by Deborah Brown

As evidenced by this notice-less bulletin board in Wellesley Square, we’re used to slow summers around here. Summer of 2016 broke that mold. Let’s just say the news offered more than concerts at Town Hall and the newest flavors of ice cream on scoop. Check out the Top 10 Wellesley stories of Summer 2016.

Macroburst whacks Wellesley, downs many trees

Dana Hall property damaged in macroburst
Dana Hall administrator’s home gets bashed by tree

A short and wicked late afternoon storm that blew through Wellesley on Tuesday, July 18 downed numerous trees, damaged homes and knocked out power in parts of town. One minute a friend and I were sitting in my family room sipping tea and commenting on the hail coming down outside (“Oh my, do you think those nasty flying ice chunks will chip the paint on the Subaru, dear?”). An hour later I stopped by that same friend’s house, not even a mile away, to survey her hard-hit home in the Cottage St. area…

Greed and goodwill at the Wellesley dump

Wellesley dump, Give and Take area

Every now and then we’ve heard the rumors: there are certain volunteers at the Wellesley Recycling and Disposal Facility’s Reusables Area who are practically making a living by scooping up and spiriting away all the good stuff that gets dropped off before anyone else can get to it, and selling it on Craigslist, Ebay, and at flea markets. Over the summer, the hubbub ratcheted up a notch with a casual comment on a closed Facebook page: “Anyone else notice that there never seems to be anything decent at the dump’s Take-and-Leave anymore?” And the conversation and the accusations were off and running…

Wellesley’s Bonsoir says bonjour to new space in Linden Square

August 11, 2016 by Deborah Brown

A bit of musical chairs has been going on in Wellesley lately. Bonsoir has moved from its former location in Linden Square to a new Linden Square location, into the spot where haute women’s fashion boutique Ceri used to be. All of Bonsoir’s Scandia Down is on sale right now, and is undoubtedly fresh as a daisy from being aired out during the move. The fine linens shop has never been shy about switching up its location —  five years back, it used to lay its head in Wellesley Square.

Bluemercury, a chain of high-end beauty product stores founded in 1999 by fabulous couple Marla and Barry Beck, and under the wing of parent company, Macy’s, is taking over the old Bonsoir spot. The inventory-rich shop, which will have a soft opening of August 26, will bring with it all the Bobbi Brown, Nars, La Mer, and any other luxury brand the beauty junkies of Wellesley can handle. The September 10 grand opening will include a deluxe sample goody bag to the first 100 customers, makeup and skin consultations, and more.

To keep the pretty theme going, upscale Luxotic Nails Bar, also in Linden Square, is polishing up its space in preparation for its post-Labor Day opening.

In Wellesley, no more excuses for ragged cuticles

July 21, 2016 by Deborah Brown

Luxotic Nails Bar, WellesleyWellesley, already home to about a dozen mani/pedi salons/spas, which might be gaining in numbers on banks and pizza places, as one of our Facebook page commenters has noted, will soon count Luxotic Nails Bar in Linden Square as the next place for the well-groomed to keep themselves that way.

There’s no shortage of new pretty palaces coming to town lately: nail salon Beauti Lux recently opened in the former Little Bits Toy Store space, and a brow threading spot is slated to open where Your French Gift used to sell lavender toiletries and Eiffel Tower tea towels.

Business owners who cater to the primped and polished seem to believe that this town is big enough for all of them. But if things take an ugly, feud-like turn, I wouldn’t be want to be anywhere near a shootout at the OK Nails Corral. I couldn’t bear to witness the inevitable broken gel tips. I’ll leave you with that chilling visual.
