Wellesley elementary school project updates—Hunnewell nuts and bolts; Hardy/Upham swing space

September 11, 2020 by Deborah Brown 1 Comment

At the September 9th School Committee (SC) meeting, SC Secretary Sharon Gray gave an update on the latest progress toward building a new Hunnewell Elementary School. Gray said that SMMA architecture firm team members gave a detailed public presentation of the civil engineering aspect of the Hunnewell project at a Planning Board meeting the previous day. Major talking points were water and sewer systems; traffic and parking; site circulation; utilities, drainage, and pretty much any other nuts-and-bolts building topic you could come up with.

The next meeting about the process, which will also be a public hearing, is October 5. Details to follow.

Hardy/Upham—swing space discussion

Although the School Building Committee has not yet put forth its recommendation for which of two elementary schools — Hardy or Upham — should be replaced, swing space discussions continue to loom large.

Of the three possibilities Gray reviewed, the most likely plan of action will be to build behind whichever school will be replaced. In this scenario, students would simply use the current Hardy or Upham school as swing space until construction on the new school is completed. Doing so would cause the fewest disruptions to students and families. In addition, there would be no expected scheduling impact for the project, which is expected to break ground in summer of 2023.

Anther plan discussed was creating a “mod farm” (a school made up of modular classrooms) sited at Hardy or Sprague. But at an estimated additional cost of $7 million dollars for a solution that doesn’t even include a cafeteria or a gym, that seems unlikely to happen. Also unlikely to come to pass would be the use of internal swing space after Hunnewell School’s expected 2024 completion. Such a plan would delay the Hardy or Upham School’s completion by one year.

Superintendent David Lussier appeared to favor building behind whichever school will be replaced, saying, “The goal is to create the fewest transitions for kids. Educationally, we’ve committed ourselves  to reduce those transitions as much as we can.”

Fastachi opening nuts shop in Wellesley this fall

August 7, 2017 by Bob Brown 1 Comment

Fastachi Wellesley

Fastachi, which runs shops selling roasted and chocolate-covered nuts in Boston and Watertown, will be launching a store in Wellesley’s Church Square this fall. The opening should satisfy those in town begging for a break from storefront fillers — such as banks and real estate offices — that don’t smell quite as good. Who knows, maybe Fastachi could become for Church Square what Wasik’s Cheese Shop is for Wellesley Square in terms of its wafting-ness.

While we knew last week when we reported that “Wellesley could soon go nuts” that Fastachi was coming, we were unable to get confirmation then from those close to the operation about this virtual state secret.

But now a sign is up on the papered-over windows of 24 Church St., which previously housed NRO Kids, so it’s officially official. Fastachi’s Susan Etyemezian says “We have been wanting to open a store in Wellesley for a while now, and when the space became available we wanted to take advantage of the opportunity; timing is everything.  We feel Wellesley is the right fit for Fastachi.”

Etyemezian pledges that “We will deliver the Fastachi Experience.  A buying experience that captures all the senses – sight, smell, taste touch and sound.” Not to mention “concierge customer service.”

Fastachi, which one friend wth exquisite taste told us is “my favorite nut store”, is run by Susan and Souren Etyemezian. Souren got started in the business in 1990 in Belmont, then moved the shop to Watertown and opened another on Charles Street in Boston, specializing in roasted nuts from from almonds to cashews and hazelnuts to pecans. Fastachi says it brings out the flavor of its specially selected nuts through a hand-roasting process involving small batches and steel drums.

Fastachi, which does a booming online business as well, also sells raw nuts, dried fruits and assorted mixes and gift sets.

Sample prices are $14 for a pound of roasted almonds and $40 for a pound of assorted chocolates. So, we’re not talking peanuts here when it comes to these gourmet treats, but a few trips to Fastachi might not break the bank either. Though if it does, you know where to find another bank around here… just not on Church Street.

Big Papi gets to work at Wellesley Dunkin’ Donuts

June 23, 2016 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

david ortiz at DD

Dunkin’ Donuts publicity guy David Ortiz, who moonlights as the designated hitter for the Boston Red Sox, worked a shift at the Rte. 9 west shop in Wellesley earlier this week. Local Dunkin’ Donuts employee Greta F. showed Big Papi, who lives across the border in Weston, how we do things in Swellesley. Apparently there was some recording going on as well for DD promotional purposes.

In other baseball-related news, David Ortiz was overshadowed during the Red Sox’s 8-7 win over the White Sox on Thursday when Mr. Swellesley sacrificed his right hand to stop a scalding liner  a ricocheted foul pop-up from impaling brushing one of his kids and gently dropped the souvenir at his kid’s feet.  The crowd went wild, as The Swellesley Family cornered its first foul ball in decades of watching baseball at Fenway Park, usually in terrible seats where no foul balls dare to fly.
