Oh, and Rwanda President Kagame visited Wellesley this week

June 3, 2016 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

The bank robbery in Wellesley Hills on Wednesday and the movie shoot in Wellesley Square on Thursday provided convenient diversions so that the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, could slip into town and hang with old friend Chief Terry Cunningham of the Wellesley Police Department.

The two go way back, or at least a couple of years back (See “Wellesley’s Police chief kinda fonda Rwanda”), through Chief Cunningham’s travels via the International Association of Chiefs of Police, an organization he currently heads up.

Kagame (third from left) posed for this relaxed photo with Chief Cunningham (second from left), town Executive Director Hans Larsen (left) and the Board of Selectmen’s David Murphy.

Wellesley Police share TD Bank robbery update

June 2, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

Wellesley Police on Thursday shared more details — including the names of suspects and the charges filed against them — related to the TD Bank robbery that took place just after noon on Wednesday at the Washington Street business.

Police yesterday said one suspect handed a teller a note and that no weapons were used. The update reveals that the note referenced a weapon, though none were shown.

Meanwhile, a driver suspiciously shielding his face inadvertantly grabbed the attention of a Wellesley police officer who circled back to see what the driver was up to. It turns out a witness saw two men dropped off by that same car and walking quickly. Police coralled all three of them, including one in the vehicle, in the Maugus Avenue area.

The individuals taken into custody were 23-year-old Adrian Hutchins of Lowell and 18-year-old Dawnte Richard of Milton, both of whom were charged with Armed Robbery and Conspiracy. Richard was held on $20,000 bail and Hutchins on $10,000 bail. The third party was a 17-year-old who was charged with Armed Robbery, Conspiracy and Carrying a Dangerous Weapon. He was held on $10,000 bail at juvenile detention facility.

(Separately, a Swellesley reader says Police picked up an alleged shoplifter in Wellesley Square on Thursday afternoon. She apparently had bags from Eileen Fisher and other stores.)

Wellesley police nab 3 suspects in attempted TD Bank robbery

June 1, 2016 by admin Leave a Comment

TD Bank Forest stWellesley, Needham and State Police joined forces to nab 3 suspects who attempted to rob TD Bank at Playhouse Square at 380 Washington Street on Wednesday shortly after noon.

According to the Wellesley Police Department, a bank employee who called in the robbery described an initial suspect as a thin male party, approximately 6 feet tall, wearing a dark colored sweatshirt. Employees relayed that the male party may have fled the bank on foot. A note was shown to the teller, but no weapons were used. An undisclosed amount of money was taken.

Responding officers located two male parties on foot in the area that fit the description of the suspect, and they were detained as part of the investigation and later taken into custody. A third individual was located in a motor vehicle nearby and was also taken into custody.

The three individuals taken into custody are a 23-year-old male, an 18-year-old male and a juvenile. Identities of the suspects are not being shared initially.

TD Banks in Wellesley have been targeted by robbers in the past on holidays. There was the heartless bandit on Valentine’s Day of 2015 (380 Washington St. location) — surveillance photos were shared publicly, but a suspect was never identified. And back in 2012 the Marathon Monday robber on Patriots Day robbed the Rte. 9 TD Bank. Today is Global Running Day, so perhaps fitting that the suspects were scampering away from the scene of the alleged crime.

Wellesley police department issues update about the Heartless bank robber

February 15, 2015 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

Update from the Wellesley Police Department, 2/15/15, 1:30 pm:

On Saturday, February 14, 2015 at approximately 2:02 p.m. the Wellesley Police Department’s Emergency Communication Center received a 9-1-1 call from an employee at TD Bank, located at 380 Washington Street, Wellesley.

The employee indicated that a bank robbery had just occurred. The suspect was described as a tall and thin male party. He was further described to be approximately 6’1” tall, wearing all black clothing, including black pants, a black hooded jacket, black gloves and his face was covered. Employees believe that the male party fled the bank on foot. A verbal threat was made to the teller, but there were no weapons shown. An undisclosed amount of money was taken from the bank.

Detectives from the Wellesley Police Department responded, interviewed witnesses and are currently investigating the incident. The Massachusetts State Police assisted the Wellesley Police Department with the investigation by providing a K-9 to help search the area for the suspect.

The Wellesley Police Department is asking that anyone who has any information about this incident or anyone who may have been in the area of Washington Street at Forest Street around 2:00 p.m. today and observed anything suspicious to call the Wellesley Police Department at 781-235-1212.

This is an open and ongoing investigation and no further information is available at this time.

Heartless: Bank robbery in Wellesley on Valentine’s Day

February 15, 2015 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

#WPD is investigating a bank robbery earlier today on Washington St at Forest St. No one was injured.

— Wellesley Police (@WellesleyPolice) February 14, 2015

The Wellesley Police Department is investigating a bank robbery that took place on Saturday, Feb 14 at the TD Bank branch at 380 Washington St, Playhouse Square. No one was injured.

TD North has been the bank of choice over the years among discerning bank robbers in Wellesley, although it’s typically the Route 9 branch that takes the hits. This is the first time we know of that the Forest St. branch has been robbed.

In December 2013, the TD Route 9 branch was robbed, and a police dog was injured.

In 2012, that branch was again knocked over, this time on Marathon Day by a man nattily dressed in a white button-down shirt, khaki shorts, and boat shoes, and back in 2010 a robber with no particular fashion sense beyond the gun he accessorized with took a turn at the Route 9 TD.

And who can forget the prolific bank robber who was even given a cute nickname, the U30 Bandit, so called because his series of robberies in the area, including one at the Bank of America on Washington St. at Abbot Rd., took less than 30 seconds. We wonder if they call him the U30 Prisoner in jail — he was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.

Wellesley bank robber: From trunk to attic to jail

September 25, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

From the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office:

A 33-year-old Quincy man has pled guilty to robbing the TD Bank on Rte. 9 in Wellesley last December and has been ordered to spend the next 4 to 6 years in jail.

“Brian Kalil walked into the bank on December 15, 2013 and presented a note demanding money. He walked out with approximately $1,600 in cash and hopped in the trunk of a Ford Focus to flee the scene,” District Attorney Michael W. Morrissey said.

Kalil was identified by several people through bank surveillance video. “Police were at his door in Quincy four days later, with a search warrant in hand for the premises,” Morrissey said. “He refused to come out of the attic area where he had secreted himself for roughly 9 hours before being flushed out by a police dog.”

In addition to finding the defendant, officers located a Burberry scarf hanging in Kalil’s closet and a set of leather gloves that appear to be those worn in the robbery, as well as $631.00 in cash.

“Assistant District Attorney Craig Kowalski asked for a state prison term of 4 to 6 years, and that was ordered by Judge Kenneth J. Fishman on September 15, 2014,” Morrissey said. “Wellesley PD put together a nice package of evidence, which likely helped shape Mr. Kalil’s decision to admit his guilt.” [Kalil becomes parole eligible after 4 years, and serves no more than 6.]

Kalil’s girlfriend, Nancy Mathieu of Quincy, has been indicted as the getaway driver. Her case remains pending and she enjoys the constitutional presumption of innocence.
