Wellesley High students win awards for art with positive themes

May 7, 2019 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Wellesley High students made their mark over the weekend at the Art of Emotion event held at Framingham’s Amazing Things Art Center, taking home prizes for best artwork and top musical composition. The annual event is sponsored by the Ben Speaks organization, whose mission is to provide positive channels for expression for youth and families to stem the tide of depression and suicide among teens.

WHS Senior Rey Hill won with a sculpture called Untouchable: A portrait of a Survivor. Asked about the meaning behind the sculpture, Hill replied:

I use art and ceramics as an outlet to escape from pent up feelings and to be able to express myself without words, since those are often difficult to come to. I created this piece through the coping process following a traumatic event I experienced. I felt unable to tell anyone and couldn’t find a way to get help, so I turned to art and sculpture. Working with clay gave me a distraction and allowed me to move past this traumatic event and become a stronger person. I tried to express the emotions I felt through a visual depiction and showing a broken person caught in a whirlwind of hurt and emotion. Working with clay and expressing my internal thoughts helped me come to terms with what had happened, and rather than trying to forget.

>Hill has been involved in ceramics at the high school for all four years, and has been in the intensive level for two. Hill has earned several awards, including two silver keys with the Scholastic Art and Writing awards. After graduating from Wellesley High, the young artist will be attending Pace University to get a degree in stage management with a minor in visual arts.

Separately, 9th grader Jadon Czerniach played his original song, “Mind of My Own,” with the help of vocals by classmate Emi Schneider.

Czerniach wrote the song about his experience living with ADHD, and wants listeners to know that despite how much the adults in his life may tell him to “calm it down”, one day he is going to soar in spite of or perhaps because of this disability. He is studying music production at WHS under Steve Scott.

Congrats to both students…

Works featured by members of Common Art at Wellesley Library

The State House, Boston. By Dante Gandini
The State House, Boston. By Dante Gandini

The Wellesley Free Library is hosting an exhibition of more than 70 works of art by members of Common Art, many of whom are accomplished artists whose professional path was interrupted and suspended by calamity and homelessness.  Every Wednesday at Emmanuel Church on Newbury St. in Boston, the Common Art program provides studio space, materials, and a caring support staff to people living in shelters, rooming houses, and on B0ston’s streets. Participants gather to draw, paint, sculpt, and share with other artists in like circumstances. When an artist finishes a work, her or she is encouraged to price it. The works are sold in multiple venues, with the artist receiving all of the proceeds. To purchase, contact Tim Green at 781-413-1793 or TDMDGreen@verizon.net

Topiary Gardens, Wellesley
Topiary Gardens, Lake Waban, by Michael William

We’ve given Boston artist Michael William a mention in the past for his Wellesley-themed works. William paints on a small scale, not spending more than a few days on each piece, and that he chooses subjects that are simple and full of light. He often finds inspiration when he spots the light moving a certain way such as “…when I’m sitting by a lake and am suddenly moved by the warm summer weather and the natural beauty that surrounds me. I consciously try not to imbue these pieces with any more than the innate beauty of the subject and the many times simple but powerful emotions that it has inspired in me.”

One of his latest works depicts a swan whiling away the day on Lake Waban, and the beloved topiary gardens on Lake Waban (pictured above) is the subject of another.
