Wellesley Business Buzz: Petco closing; end of Thirst Juice; what’s up with The Wok

December 30, 2019 by Bob Brown 2 Comments

Our round-up of the latest Wellesley, Mass., business news:

Petco closing in Linden Square

Unleashed by Petco, which has resided in Linden Square since late 2009 or early 2010, is closing down at the end of January.

The business made its presence felt in the community by holding pet adoption, holiday and other events.

Its departure roughly coincides with the recent arrival of pet store-plus Loyal Companion at the other end of Wellesley, not that that’s what prompted this closing.

End of Thirst Juice

Thirst Juice, the first of a mini-wave of juice bars to open in Wellesley in recent years, was also the first to leave back in early 2018. At that point, the owners decided to focus on their downtown Boston store.

But I happened to notice during a lunch break the other day that the Boston store closed in October. A post on their Instagram account says: “Five years ago, we opened our doors as one of the first plant-based eateries in Boston. We’re proud to have served hundreds of thousands of nutritious and tasty juices, smoothies, bowls and snacks to our customers, and to have played a role in our community’s journey to better health.”

What’s up with The Wok?

The Wok, the longtime Rte. 9 east restaurant specializing in Szechuan, Hunan and Hong Kong-style cuisine, closed for renovations over the summer. It was supposedly being reborn under new owners but remains closed.

Building permits on the windows indicate there has been some action in recent months. Anyone heard anything about the status?

It’s last kale at Wellesley’s Thirst Juice

January 30, 2018 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Thirst Juice, the green juice and smoothie shop that kicked off Wellesley’s juice bar invasion in late 2016, is closing its doors on Grove Street on Wednesday. Thirst Juice became the first retail tenant at the Belclare complex, which appears close to gaining a handful of new tenants if the window signs are to be believed.

Thirst Juice‘s Heather Stevenson confirmed that the Wellesley shop’s lease expires on Jan. 31, but emphasizes that the State Street location in downtown Boston is still going strong. “We appreciate all of the loyalty and support from our Wellesley customers over the past 15 months, and we hope to see them in Boston soon!” she adds.

Thirst Juice in Wellesley serving smoothies, shots, and more

November 20, 2016 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

Thirst Juice, Wellesley
Heather Stevenson works the counter at Thirst Juice.

Thirst Juice, a green juice and smoothie bar, is currently doing a soft opening before it goes full speed ahead with its grand opening on Nov. 29. I stopped in recently and tried out the Bad Monkey, a 20-ounce smoothie made with banana, almond butter, cacao nibs, cacao powder, dates, coconut milk, ice ($8.75). Not too sweet, it went down all too easily. Other interesting-looking things on the menu available now: Kale-idoscope juice, made with kale, spinach, carrot, and pineapple (12 oz., $6.95 and 16 oz., $8.50); shots of apple-ginger juice, and others, 1 oz., $3.10; 2 oz., $4.80); and acai bowls. To come: soups and teas.

Thirst Juice is the first business to open at the Belclare complex, which still hopes to lure a full-blown restaurant and other retailers into its Washington Street space.

Thirst Juice readies for post-Thanksgiving grand opening in Wellesley

November 16, 2016 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Thirst Juice

Thirst Juice, a green juice and smoothie bar that’s been plotting its arrival in Wellesley for more than a year, plans to have its grand opening on Nov. 29. The shop, expanding beyond its Boston roots to 41 Grove St., is technically already doing a soft opening, minus the soups, tea and formal signage.

Thirst Juice is the first business to open at the Belclare complex, which still hopes to lure a full-blown restaurant and other retailers into its Washington Street space.

Meanwhile, in Wellesley Square on Central Street, another juice bar called Cocobeet appears to be getting closer to ditching the brown paper in its windows and opening its doors next to Wellesley Toy Shop.cocobeet

Drink up Wellesley: Thirst Juice, Cocobeet getting closer

July 13, 2016 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Thirst Juice
Make way for Thirst Juice on Grove Street

Super healthy juices will soon be flowing in Wellesley, as Thirst Juice readies its spot at the Belclare complex on Grove Street and Cocobeet moves next door to the Wellesley Toy Shop.

Shame on you if you gave up on Thirst Juice, which had hoped to expand beyond its Downtown Crossing/Financial District location into Wellesley late last year (we profiled them last September). But as the business owners explain on their blog, construction has begun in earnest in Wellesley now, so their smoothies, acai bowls, soups, breakfast goodies and more should be on the way sooner than later.

Cocobeet, meanwhile, has been getting busy on Central Street since May and is readying for its opening, too, possibly by the end of summer.  As we mentioned in January, Cocobeet will be serving up cold-pressed juices, raw vegan food, superfood smoothies and organic juice cleanses, as well as breakfast items, sandwiches and salads.

(Update: The Townsman reported in late July that Cocobeet was working through some town requirements for a traffic study before getting the OK to open.)

Drink your Kale and like it: Thirst Juice opening at Wellesley Belclare this year

September 29, 2015 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Drink up, from Thirst Juice

Thirst Juice, the Downtown Crossing/Financial District juice bar opened by the lawyerly wife-and-husband team of Heather Stevenson and Christopher Roche in late 2014, is expanding its health-conscious business into Wellesley later this year at 53 Grove St., as part of the Belclare condo/retail development.

So yes, the $35M project that has been clogging up traffic for months will now be welcoming a business to unclog your innards with antioxidants and superfoods.

thirst juiceWe’re pretty sure that the kale/escarole/carrot/ginger etc., juice and smoothie concoctions from Thirst Juice aren’t the sorts of things that would have been found at the old Wellesley Inn formerly on this site. In addition to juices and smoothies, Thirst Juice offers soups, oatmeal and acai bowls. You can expect a broader range of products in the Wellesley space.

Naturally, the offerings are all vegan, raw and gluten free.

Prices range from $6.95 for small (12 oz) juices to $8.50 for large (16 oz) ones.  Smoothies (20 oz) are $8.65, though a smaller size might be available in Wellesley.  Acai bowls are $9.50 and cold-pressed juice starts at $8.95 for a 16 oz. bottle.  Food starts at $1.50 for Superfood Bites, and quinoa and noodle bowls are in the $7-$9 price range.

Foodies who have visited the Boston shop rave about it. And Thirst Juice assures customers that “It doesn’t have to taste like grass, just because it’s green.”

Thirst Juice’s Stevenson says Wellesley is a perfect spot for their products “with Wellesley’s health focused community, large number of residents who care about eating well, and high concentration of busy families who need quick and delicious nutrition on the go.”

Wellesley also feels right for Stevenson, who grew up in Lincoln and attended Winsor in Boston — she had many friends who lived in Wellesley and spent a lot of time here at friends’ houses and playing sports at Dana Hall.

“My friends and I REALLY loved Truly Yogurt growing up and spent many summer evenings eating yogurt and hanging out on their benches. Thirst found its second location after I joked to a regular customer (not knowing that the Belclare development had available retail space) that my dream location would be next to Truly in Wellesley.  It turns out that the customer is from Wellesley and is friends with the Belclare developer.  He put us in touch, and it went from there.”
Educated as a lawyer, Stevenson has thrown herself into the juice business over the past year-plus. She completed a certificate in plan-based nutrition taught by Dr. T. Colin Campbell through eCornell, as well as taken Brendan Brazier and Matthew Kenney’s plant-based nutrition for athletes course.

As anyone who has been by the Belclare development of late can see, the building is coming along. One other retailer that’s been named as an occupant is specialty clothier David Chase, which will have two boutiques at the location.

Belclare project developer Jordan Warshaw says “we’re closing in on the finish line….we’ll be done and people will be moving in within a month or so!”

Pressed Juicery adds new flavor to Wellesley’s Linden Square

November 12, 2017 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Wellesley Pressed Juicery

Wellesley this week welcomed its third new juice business over the past year, and Pressed Juicery store manager Rachel Gardner says she’s looking forward to people finding out how the Linden Square shop is different. She pointed to a wall bearing Pressed Juicery’s mission statement about making high nutrition affordable, and adds that the shop is convenience-focused for those on the go (not that the space doesn’t have ample seating for those who do want to hang out).

I stopped by the spotless Linden Square store on Sunday to taste some juice and chat with the staff. They talked up the benefits of healthy but tasty juices and freezes (soft-serve creations that I passed on after coming in from the cold). Customers popped in at a steady pace.

The shop offers bottles of its cold-pressed juices, which pack a ton of veggies, fruits and other healthy stuff into a pint, for $6.50 (though currently on sale at $5 apiece). I sampled and brought home an Apple-Lemon-Ginger-Cayenne concoction that Gardner says is great to help you get over a cold, and it indeed has a spicy kick.

I was surprised to learn that the juice is actually shipped overnight daily from California, where Pressed Juicery got its start. This way, fresh ingredients are sealed in before they get a chance to age, says Gardner, who is partial to a coconut cinnamon blend and a Greens mixture featuring kale, spinach, parsley and more. I’ll defer to Pressed Juicery to explain the ins and outs of cold-pressing and juice cleansing to you.

The business has expanded from its west coast roots onto the east coast, including throughout New York and in a few Massachusetts locations. As for the Linden Square location, the staff is looking forward to Sweetgreen soon opening next door, as the salad-eating crowd there should be ripe for juices and freezes, too.

And as for there now being three juice businesses in town when you add Pressed Juicery to Thirst Juice and Cocobeet? Well, juiceries still have a long way to go to catch up to the number of pizza joints and bank branches in town.
