Highlights from Classic Groove’s Wellesley performance

July 22, 2025 by Zoe Chen

Classic Groove, an R&B/jazz band, performed on the Wellesley Town Hall Green last Wednesday, July 16. The four-person band (guitar, bass guitar, drum set, alto/tenor saxophone) with a special guest vocalist played 60s and 70s hits with jazzy spins, including “Signed, Sealed, Delivered,” “You Can’t Hurry Love,” “My Girl,” “Brown Eyed Girl,” “September,” and “Respect.”

1

Classic Groove’s performance was energized by their powerful vocalist and multiple guitar and saxophone solos. Adjacent to the stage on the grass, kids had their share of fun, seesawing and slinking their way through colorful obstacle courses. Families and friends set out folding chairs and picnic-like foods, chatting to the pleasing music.

Small booths selling snacks and advertising lined the back of the green. Town Hall and the pink skies of the setting sun made created an incredibly pleasant atmosphere.

This Wednesday’s concert on the green will feature the Rico Barr Band performing Motown favorites, starting at 7 p.m.

New Bates playground takes recess to the next level

July 15, 2025 by Zoe Chen

The Bates Elementary School front playground (116 Elmwood Rd.) was replaced in the spring of 2025 and officially reopened, new and improved, in late April. The new playground has tons of features that take recess to the next level, including two slides of differing lengths, spinners, rope ladders, and obstacle courses.

The Park and Tree Division manages 18 playgrounds around Wellesley, including 11 at schools. Each playground has a life expectancy of 15 to 20 years. The newly renovated Bates playground is intended for kids ages 5-12, although a 16-year-old climbing through the rope ladder probably can’t hurt, right?

Next up for renovations are the Warren Park and Schofield Elementary School playgrounds, both of which will be replaced later this summer.

Showcasing Wellesley College’s birds, trees, buildings, and more trees

July 9, 2025 by Zoe Chen

I’m entering my junior year of high school, and so this summer I’ve been on a quest around Massachusetts walking the campuses of different schools. I had preexisting plans to explore Wellesley College, so when the opportunity to take photos for Swellesley arose, I gladly accepted. This photo gallery is simply a collection of photos from around campus, focused mainly on the wildlife and architecture. Fair warning, it’s about 50 percent bricks and 50 percent foliage.

This is actually the last photo I took on my spin around Wellesley College; I shot through the car window as we exited the campus. But given that this is an entrance sign, it felt fitting to put at the beginning of this little photo gallery.

With students absent from campus, what were noticeably present were the animals. As I walked past Lake Waban, a flock of geese squawked for food. Smaller birds, as well as bunnies, gave the campus a fairytale-like atmosphere. The occasional chipmunk or squirrel scurried across the path, always gone before I could snap a picture.

I quite liked the look of this building and took more than 40 photos of it. Here are four. Look closely in the arched entryway of the fourth photo, and you’ll see the first sign of human life I saw on campus, taken about 20 minutes into my walk. The college really did feel deserted.

And some orange lilies surrounding that same building. I got attacked by bugs as I tried to take photos of these flowers.

Here’s the Galen Stone Tower, named after — you guessed it — Galen Stone. He was a Boston-based financier and philanthropist in the early 1900s.

Not much notable about these last few photos, just thought the views were nice.

I realized towards the end of my walk that none of my photos had any of the Wellesley blue color. Even the sky was a cloudy grey. So I will conclude this photo gallery with a royal blue sign whose meaning I do not understand. Exciting, isn’t it.

Wellesley High robotics team teaching campers more than technical skills

July 7, 2025 by Zoe Chen

Robotics camp

The Wellesley High School robotics team, called Team Ultraviolet, held its first of three summer workshops earlier this summer at the former Upham Elementary School building. The workshops are a five-day, summer-camp-like program open to third through sixth graders. The kids spend the week building mini rovers, which are battery powered and equipped with real electronic parts.

The camp is run almost entirely by high school volunteers on the WHS robotics team. Throughout the week, volunteers present the kids with intentionally hard challenges, such as programming their rovers to navigate through mazes, to dance, or to play hot potato. The kids work in teams to solve the problems.

Sessions have high volunteer-to-camper ratios, with some as low as six campers to 12 volunteers. Larger sessions can have more than 15 campers but maintain high ratios to give the kids personalized support. Stephanie Xia, the camp’s administrative captain, is a rising WHS senior who co-founded the workshops in 2023.

“We’re not just teaching them the technical skills of how to build a robot, but also the kind of problem solving and collaborative thinking that will really help them in whatever they choose to do in the future, even if it’s not in robotics,“ Xia said.

On the last day of camp, the kids get the opportunity to meet and operate Team Ultraviolet’s robot, a 120-pound bot the size of a minifridge and three times heavier. The kids use Xbox controllers to drive the robot, which picks up foam rings and shoots them into the air. The kids got a kick out of catching the rings once the robot threw them.

“Every activity has a concept that we want the kids to learn, like loops, variables, basic movement. And then when they meet the big robot, it shows them that all this they’ve been doing with their rover kits…can all come into something as impressive as this,” Neha Guruprasad, the camp’s Impact Lead, said.

The team’s robot, named C# after the programming language and the musical pitch, was built for their annual competition. The team, a school club at WHS, typically trains its members from September to December. Members build their robot from January to March, then compete with the robot from mid-March to June. Their yearly robot is required to perform specific tasks to coincide with the competition theme, which is released in January. This past year, the team made it past the preliminary competitions and advanced to the District Championships.

All of this is expensive. Robot motors are individually $400 each, and combined with the expenses of other parts, the robot’s components can easily total thousands. Steep competition entry fees can also reach multiple thousands of dollars.

Because robotics everywhere is an expensive activity, it isn’t uncommon for robotics teams to charge prospective members hundreds of dollars in sign-up fees. Team Ultraviolet is fiercely against this in order to create an accessible environment available to anyone with an interest in STEM. Instead, Wellesley’s team finds more creative means of raising the necessary funds, including hosting these summer workshops.

“While these workshops are a big source of funding for us, that’s a side benefit. We’re really just here to spread STEM, robotics, and soft skills like that that robotics has to offer to the children,” Guruprasad said. “We offer full scholarships for this camp to kids who need it, because really it’s not about the money. It’s more about filling up the workshops and getting kids to collaborate.”

The team will host two more workshop sessions in July and August, both of which still have availability, and plans to continue hosting summer workshops in years to come.

“In terms of the future of the workshops, one thing we want to do is expand our age range. It’s always really unfortunate when there are kids interested in STEM who are either too young or too old for our workshops,” Xia said. “Also, we teach a similar curriculum every time with slight modifications. So next year we might work on expanding to have some other, varied curriculums. We are looking to do bigger and better things with the workshops next year, which is super exciting.”

Meet our Swellesley summer intern, Zoe Chen

June 26, 2025 by Zoe Chen

zoe chenHello! I’m Zoe Chen, and I’ll be interning at Swellesley this summer. I come to Wellesley from the nation’s other coast, from a town just outside of Los Angeles that is similar in size and feel to Wellesley. I’m a rising high school junior, and I often spend my summers over in Needham with family.

I’ve been a staff writer and photographer on my high school newspaper since freshman year and will serve as a Managing Editor this coming year. I wanted a chance to continue reporting over the summer while my school newspaper’s on pause, so here I am at Swellesley. Journalism (sports and photojournalism in particular) is something I’m really passionate about, and I’d love to pursue it in college and beyond.

This summer, I can’t wait to contribute to Swellesley and provide accurate local news from hopefully interesting angles. My greatest thanks to Truly’s and to readers for sponsoring Swellesley’s internship program. Feel free to reach me at zoelchen12@gmail.com.

Lunas & Labs: We dig in to Wellesley’s top dog names & breeds for 2025

June 24, 2025 by Zoe Chen

Out of 1257 different dog names, Luna is once again the most popular one in Wellesley. With 40 dogs answering to the name today, the town is up 16 Lunas since 2023. That’s one additional Luna every month-and-a-half. That’s also right on track with the rest of the nation, where Luna was 2025’s most popular dog name.

It’s not just Lunas on the rise, but total dogs, too. Wellesley has seen a spike in dog ownership since the pandemic, and with 3,309 dogs today, there are more than 500 additional pups registered since 2020.

Clumping together different spellings of same-sounding names, second place for this year is Charlie (plus variations), followed by Daisy, Coco, and Cooper, each name with 30-35 dogs each. Bailey, Millie, Teddy, Lucy, and Bella round out the top 10. Lucy, now in ninth, has fallen in popularity from second last year.

The top 20 names (Lily, Lola, Rosie, Bear, Maisey, Riley, Winnie, Ollie, Zoe, Milo) are almost exactly the same names as in 2024’s count, with a slight order shuffle. Maisey and Zoe are the only additions to the top 20, taking the places of Piper and Tucker (now 21st and 23rd). Maisey has the most alternate spellings of any name registered this year: Maisey, Maisie, Maisy, Maizy, Maysie, and Mazie.

Although Sealyham Terriers certainly aren’t the most common breed in Wellesley, Tucker & Hudson would enjoy seeing other Sealys on their frequent walks around town. In the meantime, they constantly watch for rabbits and other vermin in the backyard.

The top 30 names, which represent just 2 percent of the total unique names, make up almost 25 percent of Wellesley’s dogs. However, another 25 percent of the pooches have names shared with no other dogs. Some especially distinctive names included Brookstone Fleur de Belle Mer Noire, Commodore Barnaby Puppypants Brummer Bolton II, and King Louis XIV.

Names represented every letter of the alphabet, although U and X had only one name each (Uno and Xiao Hua). Every hue of the rainbow was present, including Scarlett, Orange, Amber, Olive, Bluey, and Violet.

For 78 dog owners, food was a source of inspiration for dog names. Some chose to call their doggies other animals like Moose, Goose, and Puffin the Filsket (the dog). Others chose world locations.

16 names zoomed in on one unexpected location, Greece. Ancient Greek gods, goddesses, and philosopher-dogs included Zeus, Homer, Zephyr, and Diogenes.

Perhaps less out of left field is Fenway and other names centered on Boston: Dunkin’ Donut, Beacon, Logan, and, of course, Boston. No dogs named Wellesley this year, although there is one Welles and one Lele…

Apparently Wellesley dog owners like their Star Wars and Disney characters too: Chewbacca, Kenobi, Leia, Luke, and Yoda; Elsa, Anna(belle), and Olaf; Simba and Nala; and others.

Dog breeds

In terms of dog breeds, Labrador Retrievers are by far the most popular in Wellesley. Labs alone make up 13 percent of Wellesley dogs, and with 422 registered, they have a more than 100 lead to the second place runner up.

Wellesley is closely aligned with the nation and world, where Labs are the second most popular breed. Nationally and globally, French Bulldogs surpassed Labrador Retrievers for the top spot; in Wellesley, French Bulldogs did not make the top 10.

Wellesley’s silver and bronze breeds are, ironically, the Golden Retriever and Golden Doodle. A town of consistency, the top three breeds have not changed in over a decade. Although, Labs do seem to be getting more popular, with 2025 seeing a 27 percent increase in the popular breed since 2023.

There are over 100 different breeds represented total, including 28 terrier varieties and 12 spaniel types. One-of-a-kind breeds include Transylvanian, Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, Bolognese, and Schipperke. Try saying that five times fast.

All info is from the Wellesley Town Clerk’s office. Wellesley dogs older than six months must be registered annually between January and March to avoid a fine.

Charlotte, our red head chihuahua dachshund mix from Puerto Rico. She’s 2. We rescued her in September. She bounces through life, never meeting any strangers. She has the softest fur imaginable. She gives hugs and the best snuggles. The most popular girl in the neighborhood.

Stella our 6 pound chihuahua. She’s 8 and we rescued her from Texas in 2022. She’s sweet and spicy. Loves people, especially kids. Very vocal about dogs she doesn’t trust.

Eva, our Tennessee special. She’s almost 16 and we’ve had her since she was a puppy. It’s her world, we’re just living in it. She’s slowing down but can still chase the mailman down the street to get her daily cookie! She chases down almost every white vehicle she sees, I think she thinks they’re delivering something so of course they must have cookies for her.
