Wellesley birthday parties are drive-by affairs these days

April 27, 2020 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

Well-wishers of Natalie Ruggles delivered birthday wishes directly to the Schofield School 4th grader on her big day. The newly minted 10-year-old may have missed out on a traditional party, but she got by with a little help from her friends.

Mom Christina said, “This may not be the kind of ‘party’ Natalie would have chosen, but I’ll bet it will be the one she remembers forever.”

Latest Wellesley events canceled or postponed due to coronavirus concerns

March 9, 2020 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

Updated: 3/12/20

The Town of Wellesley closed the public schools and Tolles Parsons Center for about 2 weeks starting 3/13/20, and had already canceled non-essential government meetings.

The list of events in Wellesley canceled or postponed due to coronavirus (COVID-19) concerns is growing. It’s worth checking in advance before heading to any event, as cancellations have come fast and furious. The latest:

  • The Division 2 girls’ hockey state tournament game originally slated for March 15 has been canceled, and Wellesley High has been named a co-champ.
  • The Library Foundation Gala, originally scheduled for April 2, has been postponed. Organizers will reach out with a new date once it is determined.
  • Wellesley College has temporarily suspended access to its concerts for those from outside the college community.  This applies for events scheduled to take place after spring break as well. It has also canceled its Carillon Open Tower (March 12) and Midday Muse (March 19) events for all. The college will attempt to offer live streaming for many of its events.
  • Wellesley Symphony Orchestra has postponed its March 15 family concert, it hopes to reschedule.
  • Wellesley Youth Basketball has canceled its season-end banquet, which was to have taken place March 15.
  • Wellesley Community Children’s Center cancels public portion of its fun run, which had been scheduled for March 21. A silent auction and more will go on.
  • League of Women Voters of Wellesley has canceled its Meet the Candidates night, which had been slated for March 12. Read our interviews with candidates.
  • The Wellesley Democratic Town Committee’s Town Candidates and Ballot Forum, planned for the Wellesley Community Center on 3/9,  has been canceled.
  • Friends of Wellesley Council on Aging’s Casino Night, originally scheduled for March 21, has been postponed, hopefully for later this year.
  • Schofield Elementary School 5th graders vs. teachers basketball game, originally set for 3/10, has been postponed. Stay tuned for a new date.
  • Wellesley College’s Whitin Observatory has canceled its public nights for the rest of spring 2020
  • Eric Jackson: Jazz through the 20th century presentation, scheduled by the Council on Aging and the Wellesley Free Library for March 12 at the library, has been canceled
  • Saint Paul Church in Wellesley called off its St. Patrick’s Day dinner: “We are disappointed to announce that out of an abundance of caution we will not be holding the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dinner at St. Paul on March 14.  We thank everyone for their efforts to date and look forward to next year. If you have already purchased tickets, please send an email to stpaulsocialcommittee@gmail.com so that we can provide you a refund.”
  • This coming weekend’s Junior Festival and Youth Treble Chorus Rehearsal slated to be held 3/13-3/14 at Lincoln-Sudbury High has been canceled. The Youth Treble Chorus Performance has been postponed for the time being, too. 28 kids from Wellesley Middle School and High School grades 7-9 had been selected after auditioning on Feb. 1.

Wellesley Brownies bring cookies to sugar-starved college students

January 30, 2020 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

Enterprising Wellesley Brownie Troop 82914 knows how to make productive use of an early-release Wednesday. The Schofield group turned up at the Wellesley College Lulu Wang Center, set up a tempting display of Girl Scout cookies, and raked in the sales. College students hungry for Thin Mints, Caramel de-Lites, Trefoils, and more rushed the table, cash in hand, as the scouts ran back and forth to fulfill orders. The chaos was beautiful and fun and exactly what everybody needed on a mid-winter day. Nice job, Brownies and moms, and a shout-out to Wellesley College for encouraging the mix and mingle of the town’s elementary school girls with college students they can look up to.

Wellesley High School quiz kids

A team of students from Wellesley High School has qualified to compete as one of 17 schools from across Massachusetts on Season 11 of WGBH’s televised academic tournament, High School Quiz Show. Tapings of the show will take place in January 2020 and tests students’ knowledge in math, science, civics, literature, history, current events and more. No stranger to the high-stakes Q & A contest, this will be Wellesley’s fifth appearance on High School Quiz Show.

Hardy School second graders will take a field trip to the Wheelock Family Theatre in Boston next week.

Schofield School is standing behind Team Skofield Spellarz as they prepare for the Wellesley Education Foundation Spelling Bee. The Bee takes place on Wed., November 13 at Sprague Elementary School at 7pm.

Tenacre School fifth graders recently launched their hot air balloons on Centennial Field and were cheered on by parents and other classes who came to watch the event. The students constructed the 3-meter tall balloons in class from tissue paper, glue, string, and a copper ring. This is a great example of a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) activity, because it integrates so much content across those disciplines. Some of the concepts and skills that students are exposed to during this activity are metric measurement, proportions, building models, density, gravity, buoyancy, convection, engineering, and design. The balloon launch is by far one of the favorite Tenacre experiences and captures the imaginations of students.

Shopper’s Corner is open at Schofield School in Wellesley

September 15, 2019 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

Shoppers Corner, WellesleyShopper’s Corner, Schofield Elementary School’s PTO-run resale shop that sells sells gently used clothing, accessories and sports clothing, including skates and cleats at rock-bottom prices, is back in business. Shopper’s Corner is located in the basement of Schofield School at 27 Cedar St. The store is open during the school year every Wednesday that school is in session, 8:30am – 12:15pm, and the first Saturday of most months (starting 10/4/19), 9am – 11am.

Established in 1952, Shopper’s Corner stocks its inventory through consignments and donations. With a lot of hard work from dedicated volunteers, the PTO turns the good used stuff they get into almost $10k per year for the school.

Nearly 400 take part in Schofield 5K race

June 2, 2019 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

schofield2

While I didn’t run the Schofield 5K this year, I did nearly run into it. I was on my way to play basketball at the Ouellet Field playground on Sunday morning, and just as I was about to turn on to Cedar Street I saw the throngs lining up at the starting line. Oh yeah, the race…

I skedaddled and found another way to the court on the other side of the starting line, allowing the runners and walkers to make their way across the hilly course on the cloudy-then-sunny Sunday morning.

Wellesley’s Greg Caiazzo finished first in a time of 20 minutes, with Yimei Huang outpacing all female runners to repeat as the women’s champ in 20:27. Full race results here.

When I circled back after my basketball game to take a few photos, the prize announcer was surrounded by kids eager to get their medals, while other youngsters bounced around on giant Fun Fair inflatables set up on the Schofield Elementary School field.
