Suburban Wellesley with its close-together homes and sidewalk-lined streets isn’t the place to live if you want to keep horses on your property. Technically, it’s not impossible to get the kids a pony, however, town bylaws kind of get in the way. They state, “No horses…shall be kept closer than 150 feet from an abutting dwelling unless it is occupied by the owner of the said animals.” The 150-feet part is a deal breaker for most lots in Wellesley.

There are two places in Wellesley where horses live in harmony with the bylaws—Hunnewell Farm on the Natick/Wellesley line, and Dana Hall. Neither place offers horseback riding lessons to the public. For that, you’ll have to go further afield.
