Several members of the Wellesley Interact Club recently earned a citation from State Senators Richard J. Ross and Cynthia Stone Creem. The citation reads, “In recognition of your success co-facilitating the Break Free from Depression curriculum with middle school age youth at the Boys and Girls club of Waltham as part of your Interact club’s Wellness Project”.

For more information on Interact and the Wellness Project, contact Bob Anthony ([email protected]); the curriculum is available through Boston Children’s Hospital.

November 24, 2014 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

A team of 6 Wellesley High School students has cracked the final 16 for season 6 of WGBH’s High School Quiz Show. That means the teens, who beat out dozens of other teams, will be competing in the bracketed single-elimination tourney on TV in the new year.

This is the second year in a row that Wellesley’s team has made the final 16. This year’s team again boasts members with a diverse set of knowledge that should help them answer questions across various categories.

We’ll keep you posted on when the shows are scheduled to run.

In the meantime, here’s your team, coached by WHS math and computer science teacher Robert Cohen.

Wellesley High School Junior Class: The Blitz Is On

November 8, 2014 by admin Leave a Comment

Class of 2016 OfficersThe annual Wellesley High School Junior Class Blitz Day will take place this year on Tuesday, November 11th. On Blitz Day, teams of students from the class of 2016 will fan out across the town of Wellesley seeking donations from businesses and merchants for the Junior Class Auction, which will take place on March 21, 2015.

The support of the business community is essential to the success of this event, which is our major fundraiser. Proceeds from the Junior Auction will subsidize the costs of future activities for the Class of 2016 so they are affordable for all of our classmates. In addition, 10% of the profits of the auction will be donated to a charity selected by the student body. From the Junior Boat Cruise, to the Senior Prom and Senior Banquet, we look forward to the years ahead and appreciate the support of our community, teachers and parents.

We thank all Wellesley merchants for their consideration in helping us with this endeavor.  We also warmly welcome all town citizens to attend what we know will be a terrific event in March.

Emily Zeytoonjian, Vice President
Lizzie Mears, Secretary

From Rotary Club of Wellesley:

The Rotary Club of Wellesley has announced its Peer Leadership and Emotional Wellness project, partnering with the Rotary Club of San Juan in Puerto Rico.
“The objectives of the program are to enhance emotional health and wellness in the youth population of greater San Juan and Wellesley,” according to Robert Anthony, project manager for the Wellesley club. He explained that the program will promote emotional health by “providing kids access to activities that improve coping skills and knowledge so they may better balance the weight of life’s worries.”
The Rotary Club of Wellesley meets every Tuesday night. Its mission is to provide programs and services designed to enhance and improve life in the community, the nation and the world. Rotary clubs may be best known for preventing polio; this project is a step toward preventing anxiety and depression. On October 7, the club hosts a meeting at 6pm in the Wellesley College Club; all are welcome to attend.
The Rotary Club of San Juan wellness project manager is Dr. Johnny Rullan, former Director of Health for Puerto Rico.
Anthony said the program, which replicates the wellness project started last year by the Rotary Club of Wellesley, “will help to head off future problems by working with teen mentors to reach youth between the ages of 8 to 15.” Up to 15% of the population experiences depression, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
On September 14, nineteen teens from Wellesley, Weston, Sherborn and Natick launched the Wellesley Interact club and attended training to become mentors for the project. Seven are pictured: David Michael, Nathan Chiu (Wellesley Interact club President), Teddy Sevilla (Vice-president), Harman Bharj (Director), Joey Kinyanjui (Director), Thomas Capozzi (Director) and Nicole Frontero (Secretary).

High schoolers step up and beautify Wellesley Post Office flower boxes

May 9, 2013 by admin Leave a Comment

By Judy Papp

Have you ever wondered which government agency takes care of Wellesley’s Post Office flower boxes?  No, the flowers are not paid for by the PO budget, nor do they add to the government deficit!  It is the Wellesley Gardeners’ Guild that four times a year purchases and plants all the flowers and then waters and monitors them on a daily basis.  They hold a variety of fundraisers and organize watering schedules for all their members.

But one finishing touch remained undone – over the years paint had chipped on the window boxes and they definitely needed a make over.  So recently our first High School volunteer – Dash Ankermann – took the lead in sprucing up the flower boxes.  Taking time out from his spring break, he gave a face lift to the boxes at the Wellesley Hills Post Office, scraping, sanding, priming and painting till they looked as good as new.

Then the Guild organized for an additional group of High School students, members of the Key Club – Olivia Czubarow, Katrina Gates, Shannon Duffy, Teddy Sevilla, Kate Westenberg, Marissa Bosland, Amanda Ong – to paint the flower boxes at the Wellesley Square Post Office and clean up the surroundings.

The club has already received numerous compliments from patrons, including the PO Manager.  One impressed person even gave a $20 donation once he realized that the funds for the plants and the paint are donated by Wellesley Gardeners’ Guild members.  Plans are to spend it on a replacement bush since several dead ones were pulled during the clean-up.
