Early voting in Wellesley

October 29, 2018 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

First early voter
John Gray was the first early voter in Wellesley at 8:00 AM on Monday, October 222. Seen here with poll worker Diane Hall.

Wellesley is offering early voting at two locations in town for Wellesley registered voters.

Join the 10%

According to Town Clerk KC Kato, “Early voting has started at the Warren Building at 90 Washington Street. So far, we have received 1,651 early voting ballots. That represents about 10% of our active voters. We encourage everyone to early vote at the Warren Building, basement level. We will be there through November 2, 8am – 5pm Monday through Friday; and during special extended hours of  8 am – 8 pm on Thursday, and 8am – 2pm on Saturday.”

If you need to cast an absentee vote, Kato says, “The last day to apply for an absentee ballot is noon on November 5th. However, the voter needs to allow for mail time. Only ballots received by November 6 at 8pm will be counted.”

Here are all the important dates, times, and places for voting early and getting a flu shot while you’re at it.

Vote early at the Warren Recreation Building

Early voting will be offered at the Warren Recreation Building, 90 Washington St. through November 2, 2018:

Monday through Friday from 8am – to 5pm

Special extended hours:
Thursdays 8am to 8pm

Get your flu shot at the Rec Building while you’re at it. Here are the dates and times.

Vote absentee by Nov. 6

Absentee ballots are available for registered voters who will be unable to vote Early or at the Polls due to:

absence from the Town of Wellesley during normal polling hours; or
physical disability preventing you from going to the polling place; or
religious beliefs

How to find out which precinct you’re in

Mass.gov has a nifty page where you can plug in your address and it will tell you not only where to vote, but who our Town Clerk is (that would be KC Kato), the names of our elected officials and district representatives and links to their pages that include their phone numbers, emails, and other information.

Reminder: Voting day on Tuesday means 2-hour delayed opening for Wellesley public schools

November 7, 2016 by admin 2 Comments

Wellesley votesDue to significant anticipated voter turnout for Tuesday, November 8 presidential election, the Wellesley public schools will open with a two-hour delay on that day. Since many of the schools serve as voting places, administrators want to ensure that safe operations are maintained safe throughout the day.

The two-hour delay will allow the schools to avoid the combination of arriving students and the morning rush of voters at voting locations. It will also provide school staff with an opportunity to vote in their home communities before reporting to work.

Administrators have had some questions about how the delay will work and have released the following clarifications:

  • All students will arrive 2 hours later than the regularly scheduled school start time.
  • If your student takes the bus, pickup will be 2 hours later than the regular pick up time.
  • Before school programs will not operate on that day.
  • The following is the actual schedule for students on November 8th:
School Student Report Time
PAWS Preschool 10:45 am
Bates 10:30 am
Fiske 10:30 am
Hardy 10:30 am
Hunnewell 10:30 am
Schofield 10:30 am
Sprague 10:30 am
Upham 10:30 am
Middle School  9:50 am  (doors open 9:25am)
High School  9:30 am  (begin with Advisory)

Ballots – This is a primary. Voters enrolled in a party must vote the ballot for that party. Voters who are unenrolled (independent) will choose a ballot at the check-in table. Your party status will not change. Please note this election also elects the local political town committee slates. You may vote for the whole slate by choosing “GROUP” at the beginning of the list and filling in that oval. If you wish to vote for individuals, fill in the ovals next to each name.

Names of presidential candidates who have suspended their campaigns do appear on the ballot.

Voting procedure – Most polling places will have two lines for check-in of voters. Voter lists are arranged alphabetically by street name. Voters should check signs at the entrance to the polling place to find the correct line based on your street address. Voters will check in at the table by stating your street name house number then your name. The Inspector will repeat your address and name aloud. If you are listed as “inactive” you will need to show current proof of continued residency in Wellesley. If you registered by mail and have not yet voted in Massachusetts you will need identification. All other voters will be issued ballots without further identification.

After check-in, voter will proceed to ballot marking booths. Voter should use the ballot marking pen to fill in the oval next to the candidate of your choice. After marking the ballot, voter should proceed to checkout table before depositing ballot in tabulation machine. If voter makes an error in marking the ballot, voter may have up to three replacements.

Voter should remain at the ballot machine until a “BALLOT CAST ” message is shown on the screen. Error messages will direct the voter if the machine detects a marking error. Voter may choose to cast the original ballot or obtain a new one to correct errors. Voters in line should not attempt to insert a ballot until the message screen shows “READY”.

It’s official: Not all Wellesley College students are voting for alum Hillary Clinton

February 4, 2016 by Bob Brown Leave a Comment

While Democratic Presidential contender Hillary Rodham Clinton is one of Wellesley College’s all-star alums (Class of ’69), it is apparently not a graduation requirement for students to vote for her.

The Washington Post reports that Bernie Sanders, for one, also has supporters at the school, and that those students are letting their opinions be heard, as you can see in this new video posted in advance of next week’s New Hampshire primary.
