Junior Womens Club Marketplace to pop up

Wellesley Marketplace
Wellesley Marketplace, 2019

The Wellesley Hills Junior Women’s Club (WHJWC) will host a mini pop-up version of its traditional Marketplace event, December 10-12, in Linden Square (at the former Petco location). The holiday shopping showcase will include 55 vendors of crafts, gifts, specialty items, baked goods, and more.

Due to COVID, the club had to make the difficult decision to cancel their beloved large-scale Marketplace for the second year in a row. WHJWC president Lindsey Crowley said, “The decision was not made lightly, but it was the right one at the time. However, we heard from so many people how Marketplace was their favorite holiday shopping event, so we put our heads together to figure out how we could bridge the gap this year. POP will showcase some of our tried and true vendors while also mixing it up with some new artisans to give the Marketplace experience a vibrant and fresh twist.”

EVENT: Wellesley Hills Junior Womens Club Pop-Up Marketplace
ADMISSION: Free
DATES/TIMES: Fri, Dec. 10, noon-5pm; Sat., Dec. 11, 9am-4pm; Sun., Dec. 12, 9am-4pm.
LOCATION: 165 Linden St., Wellesley, MA

MassBay leads dignity initiative

MassBay Community College is partnering with Framingham’s Dignity Matters to provide free period products to students in need. The inability to afford or access menstrual care products is a growing issue among homeless and disadvantaged women and girls, according to the organizations.

Dignity Matters is a non-profit organization that collects, purchases, and supplies menstrual care products, bras, and underwear to women and girls who are homeless or in need.

Free menstrual care products provided by Dignity Matters have been made available in the women’s restrooms on MassBay campuses in Wellesley Hills, Framingham, and Ashland.

This initiative is led by MassBay’s Student Nourishment And Care Committee, which is a group of staff, faculty, students, and community volunteers dedicated to eliminating basic need barriers that are obstacles to student success.

Holiday happenings in Wellesley

December 20, 2019 by Deborah Brown Leave a Comment

There are lots of opportunities around Wellesley to get into the holiday spirit:

Holiday worship schedules in Wellesley, 2019

Happy holidays, Wellesley. By now you’re probably ready to slow down, set aside the to-do list, and contemplate the reason for  the season. Some of Wellesley’s houses of worship celebrate with all the formality you might expect from historic churches with Puritan roots, while others have a more casual flair or take a non-denominational approach to the holidays. All the services bring people together, and all are welcome. Here’s a list of upcoming Wellesley services.

Town of Wellesley, Holidays schedule

The Town of Wellesley will follow a holiday schedule on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Here’s the breakdown.

Town of Wellesley has kicked off the festivities

The Town of Wellesley has draped trees with holiday lights from the Hills to the Square. The tree lights and wreaths throughout Town are made possible by very generous donors and businesses in the community and are hung by Wellesley’s own Municipal Light Plant workers, all to make Wellesley festive during the holiday season.

In addition, look in front of Town Hall for the menorah, the Christmas tree, and the crescent to appear soon. And of course, the high holy tradition of free metered parking has been put in place.

Details on free 2-hour parking in Wellesley:

The Board of Selectmen has waived parking fees at all two-hour street meters in Town through Tuesday, December 31. This includes two-hour meters in all municipal-owned parking lots.

Parking fees are NOT waived at four-hour meters, private parking lots and commuter rail lots.

Wellesley Free Library activities for kids, teens, and adults

The Wellesley Free Library has a full roster of fun holiday activities planned including a holiday wrapping station at the Hills branch; a holiday jazz concert with the Kareem Sanjaghi Band; gingerbread houses construction with graham crackers and icing; Sankta Lucia story and craft; holiday sing-a-long with David Polansky; a LEGO Winter Village set-up; Giant Snowpeople craft; and more.

Details here.

Says You, NatickSays You! heads ‘Home for the Holidays’ this year thanks to Walnut Hill School for the Arts. Join Says You on Thursday, December 27 and Friday, December 28, at the Keiter Center in Natick, for a special live event. If you’ve never tuned in to the popular weekly WGBH radio show, here’s how it works: Take one word, add two teams, create three definitions and throw in a live audience: and that’s Says You! See what happens when two teams vie for accuracy in the most literate and liberal of arts at the hilarious expense of the English language.  Two games will be played with a brief intermission. The seasonal cast includes Wellesley’s own Carolyn Faye Fox, along with Barry Nolan, and Arnie Reisman.

And for those of you who would like to start the laughs rolling a little earlier, tickets are available for an intimate Q&A with the cast before the show at 6:30pm. For details contact Lenny Paul at (860) 510-8158 or Lenny@saysyou.net

Sandy Hook mom tells her powerful story at Wellesley library, advocates for Safe Schools

March 28, 2018 by Deborah Brown 1 Comment

Michele Gay, Safe and Sound Schools
Michele Gay, Safe and Sound Schools co-founder and Executive Director of Safe and Sound Schools, has made it her life’s work to “make our schools safer for our children, teachers, administrators, and staff, through education, active awareness, and collaboration.”

Wellesley Action Alliance on March 21 at the Wellesley Free Library welcomed Michele Gay, the mother of a Sandy Hook Elementary School student who was among the 20 children and six adults killed on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut. The gunman killed himself as first responders arrived on the scene. Before the massacre at the school, he fatally shot his mother in their home. Gay, the Co-founder and Executive Director of Safe and Sound Schools, has made it her life’s work to “make our schools safer for our children, teachers, administrators, and staff, through education, active awareness, and collaboration.” She  travels across the country sharing her message of inspiration, recovery, and school safety education and advocacy.

Joelle Reidy, co-founder of Wellesley Action Alliance, introduced Gay to the crowd of about 150 noting that, “The purpose of the Wellesley Action Alliance is to create a safer community through awareness and education.”

A heartbreaking story

And then Gay told the heartbreaking story, step-by-step, of what happened on the day that her youngest daughter Josephine Grace, known to her family and friends as Joey, was murdered by a local 20-year old who was disturbed, armed, and dangerous. She says she and her husband Bob were attracted to Newtown because they wanted to provide the kind of small-town experience for their children that the town of 27,000 offered. “I had chosen this town and this elementary school…it just had a warmth about it,” she said. Joey “…had real friends at this school which is an exceptional situation for a non-verbal autistic child.”

But after a typical enough morning getting Joey and her two older girls off to school that day, a Robocall delivered the chilling news that all of the Newtown schools were in lockdown due to a shooting. No information about which school. Nothing about what to do. After a phone calls to the schools went unanswered Gay, and seemingly every other parent in Newtown, hopped into her car to get information. “It was way scary. There were lots of frantic people on the road.”

She passed the middle school. Ok, there are no emergency vehicles there. Everything looked calm. She knew her oldest daughter [Read more…]
