Movie “The Greens are Gone” filming in Wellesley
(UPDATE: Film title has been changed to We Don’t Belong Here).
The Elm Bank Reservation neighborhood on the Wellesley/Dover/Natick line has been starry-eyed this week about movie trailers rolling through the area. Here’s the scoop:
A film called The Greens are Gone is filming at Elm Bank and it sounds like Thursday will be the crew’s last day here.
Supposedly, they’ll be working some Hollywood magic to blow up the Cheney Bridge without really blowing it up (which is a good thing since the back entrance to the park on Turtle Lane is off limits except to only the privileged).
The Peer Pedersen-directed movie stars Catherine Keener, Cary Elwes (most famous for his role in The Princess Bride and who apparently hasn’t been in the Boston area in 26 years), and Maya Rudolph of Bridesmaids and SNL fame, among others. The film, a drama about what else…a dysfunctional family, is slated to arrive in theaters next year. We’re not sure which, if any, of the big name actors are on location.
Some wondered whether the Whitey Bulger movie Black Mass, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Johnny Depp, might have bullied its way into Wellesley this week, as it has been filming in Massachusetts. But that doesn’t seem to be the case at least at this location.
Wellesley has been the location of movie-making in the past, including for The Company Men and Mona Lisa Smile. Ghosts of Girlfriends Past was also filmed in part at Elm Bank.
Antique cars parade through Wellesley
Dozens and dozens of antique and flashy cars cruised through Wellesley on Sunday on their way to Elm Bank Reservation (which is technically in Dover, save for the Cheney Bridge at the entrance) for the annual classic car show.
We ran across many familiar Wellesley faces at the show, including some of the car owners. Among them: Bob Richards, shown sitting here behind his 1911 Ford Model T, and Barbara O’Brien, the retired longtime Hunnewell Elementary School secretary, whose husband Dick displayed a 1929 Ford Cabriolet.

Wellesley restaurants partaking in Fresh Taste fundraiser at Elm Bank
A handful of Wellesley restaurants/food providers will take part at the Natick Visiting Nurse Association’s 8th annual Fresh Taste benefit on Thursday, June 19 from 6-9pm at Elm Bank Reservation on the Wellesley/Dover/Natick line.
Former WCVB anchor Susan Wornick will host the event, which will raise funds to support the Natick VNA in its endeavor to provide home health care to individuals throughout MetroWest, regardless of their ability to pay. Funds will be raised through sponsorships, ticket sales, on-site donations and through a live and silent auction. Last year, Fresh Taste raised more than $60,000. Additionally, the winning ticket for a six-day/five-night round-trip for two to Carmel, Calif., will be drawn and announced at the event.
Wellesley restaurants particpating include Captain Marden’s Seafoods/The Cod Squad Food Truck, The Cottage, Dorset Café, The Local, Peet’s Coffee and Tea, Whole Foods Market. A bunch of other local restaurants, including Needham’s Sweet Basil, will also be there.
Tickets to the event are $75, and all proceeds will benefit the Natick VNA.
Circus Smirkus looking for new “Wellesley” location
Circus Smirkus, which annually has been treating fans in Wellesley and surrounding communities to its kid-performed shows in recent summers at Elm Bank Reservation, is looking for a different spot this summer “due to difficulties beyond our control.” Circus Smirkus is eyeing the Hosmer School in Watertown or Gore Place in Waltham.
