Rotary, Wellesley High Spanish Club organizing Sol Y Canto concert in May

The Wellesley Rotary Club is partnering with the Wellesley High School Spanish Club to produce the Sol Y Canto concert at the school on May 16 at 7:30PM. Although most of the songs are in Spanish, great care is taken by the musicians to translate all lyrics and to engage the audience in bi-lingual singing.

Andrea Kaiser, Rotarian and Chair of the Concert event, has been meeting with  Spanish Club officers and committee Gabby Clifford, Bonnie Yang, Nicole Frontero, Jasmine Hills, Karen Yee and Luz Barrientos (advisor). The club is now selling tickets to the upcoming performance by the Sol Y Canto Pan-Latin sextet at $15 for students and $30 for adults.

On April 27 at 1:30PM, the lead musicians/singers from Sol Y Canto will present a workshop at Wellesley High for students studying Spanish.

The Spanish Club has a full agenda of activities throughout the school year, including cooking and serving foods from Spanish-speaking countries and introducing these dishes to members of other clubs within Wellesley High School; Karaoke Nights along with other clubs; a Piñata Party every October to celebrate The Day of the Dead; Trivia Nights with other WHS clubs that promote cultural understanding; Zumba/Salsa classes for club members; and a December Toy Drive that provides holiday gifts for residents of a shelter in Framingham.

The Spanish Club’s major fundraising activity, selling Burritos at Seminar Day, supports a child in Guatemala. Marco, now age 11, has been receiving a donation each year since he was 4, and the gift will continue until he turns 18. This project, run through Children International, raises money for underserved children around the world. The annual donation provides help with education, medical needs and clothing.

The Rotary Club of Wellesley will be presenting the Spanish Club with a donation of $500 at the Sol Y Canto concert. The Spanish Club will use the proceeds to support its activities, and to help Marco, who now needs additional dental services.

If you’d like to attend the performance, tickets are available through the Spanish Club, Windsor Press at 356 Washington St. and Pinnacle Residential Properties at 666 Washington St. in Wellesley.

Wellesley Rotary recognizes writing contest winners

February 7, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

rotary writing contest winners 2014The Wellesley Rotary Club has recognized three middle school students as winners of its writing contest, which required participants to compose a 350-to-750-word essay using the following topic:  “How I can apply the Rotary Four-Way Test in my Life.” (The Test, created by a Rotarian back in 1932: Is it the Truth? Is it Fair to all concerned? Will it build Goodwill and Better Friendships? Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?)

Some students wrote about how the test applied to their own life and others wrote to teach others about the test, a non-partisan and non-sectarian ethical guide.

Pictured are the winners;  Caroline Roy, first place; Kleo Mitrokostas, 3rd place, and Madelyn Shultz, 2nd place, with Nora Pou, Rotary’s Director of the Vocational Avenue of Service
