Spread the news: Butter named Senior Pastor at Wellesley Village Church

February 9, 2015 by Deborah Brown

Pastor Butter wellesley village churchThe Reverend Sarah Sarchet Butter this past weekend was introduced as the 18th Senior Pastor of Village Church in Wellesley Square. She plans to start full-time in August.

There hasn’t been much churn among Senior Pastors at the congregational church in recent times. Rev. Butter replaces Martin Copenhaver, who had served as pastor since 1994 and left last year.

Rev. Butter and her family are moving here from the Chicago area, where she was Senior Pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Wilmette. Butter has been an ordained minister for 22 years.

The selection committee said she was a unanimous choice, despite Boston sports knowledge not being her bread-and-butter (she didn’t originally know who  Gronk or Big Papi was). The congregation gave the Reverend a standing ovation on Sunday upon approving her selection.

Wellesley Village Church to hold rummage sale. All are welcome

October 31, 2014 by Deborah Brown

Wellesley Village Church Rummage SaleThe Wellesley Village Church, located at 2 Central St. in Wellesley Square, is holding its annual rummage sale on Saturday, November 1, 9am – 1pm.

Speaking of the church, also known as Wellesley Congregational Church, it is the subject of the Wellesley Historical Society’s History Mystery for October. The question: On the Halloween evening of October 31, 1900 the bell of the Wellesley Congregational Church began to toll without a soul in sight!  Deacons, policemen and residents rushed to the scene but found the church in darkness and no one pulling the rope to the bell; however, the bell continued to toll through the evening!  Any ideas on how this spooky mystery was solved?  Return on Oct. 31st to learn the answer to this Halloween History Mystery!

Visit the WHS site for the answer.
