Drive-By Pies Bake Shop

With the holiday season right here and now and White’s Bakery, maddeningly, not yet open, I wanted to find an indie-owned shop for my seasonal dessert needs. Drive-By Pies is all homemade, all the time. They’ve got fruit pies, cream pies, chicken pot pies, bars, and scones, and cookies. I’m a big fan of their triple chocolate chip cookies, which don’t have weird softening agents or unpronounceable chemicals mixed into them. They’re simply made from the kind of ingredients you have in your own pantry.
The storefront place has a counter and four stools, but it does mostly a take-out business. They do sandwiches also, and their Chipotle Chicken Melt hit the spot. Breakfast sandwiches, oatmeal, and other early morning offerings are also available. I brought home a chicken pot pie for dinner for my family, but they objected to the ratio of chicken to vegetables, calling it a carrot pie in disguise. Guess next time I’ll bring home an apple pie. Nobody will complain if for breakfast I put out slices of that paired with slabs of cheddar cheese.
CJ’s Northside Grille

Their specialties are roast beef, breakfast, and more. We went for the more part and tried out their ice cream after a hike up nearby Tipling Rock at the Nobscot Scout Reservation. It was our mission to replace all the calories we burned hiking, and then some. We accomplished out mission by way of CJ’s brownie batter ice cream, which wasn’t the dense mass of dark chocolate that I was expecting, but a lighter version that was lovely. The cookie dough ice cream was standard, with plenty of cookie dough blobs in a rich vanilla base. One of us tried out the strawberry frappe, which came thick, creamy and generously sized. Since we were sitting at the counter, I ordered a cup of tea to civilize the whole decadent experience.
CJ’s is a community-oriented type of place that hosts things like the cheerleading team’s annual car wash or serves up burgers for the Framingham High School graduating class. It can get quite crowed at lunch time, but there is outdoor seating to handle the overflow in good weather.

Bonapita Mediterranean Bakery and Grille, 2/2015

Recently, I sneaked out of Wellesley and went downtown for lunch at Bonapita. With all the snow and transportation issues that city is having right now, I figured it was my duty to jump the Wellesley border, if only for a few hours, to help out the city I love. The crossing was painless. I hopped on the MBTA Green line D train out of Waban, got off at Downtown Crossing and there I was, in the big city. Fabulous.
Less fabulous is the fact that Boston has been pounded by 78.5 inches of snow as of this writing. Normal snowfall by this time of year is 27.4. That amount of fluffy white makes a city that prides itself on its broadmindedness as the Athens of America into a very narrow place. The streets are narrow, the sidewalks are narrow, and your chances of getting parking are narrow to nonexistent.
Despite the inconveniences of so much snow, Bonapita is doing its best to remind us that out there in the world is a warm Mediterranean, and they are serving up the flavors that can take us there, if only for a meal. The lunch spot, open Monday – Friday, 11:30am – 4pm, offers four main dish choices: Chicken a la Plancha (chicken marinated in spices, roasted on a hot plancha grill); meatballs cooked with lemon and herbs; black bean and beets patties; and mushrooms, lentils, and thyme.
Decide on one of the four and have them fill it, plate it, or toss it, meaning you either get your meal in a homemade soft pita, on a platter, or as a salad. I tried the chicken a la Plancha, tossed ($7.99) and was served a filling, healthy meal. The hot sauce they serve on the side added even more flavor to a crisp salad that was already packed with sunshiny flavor.
In addition, they offer a few soups. Red lentil, chick pea, and sweet green pea were on the menu the day I was there.
Chipotle Mexican Grill 7/2013

If you’re on Route 9 in Framingham running errands and crave a quick Mexican lunch or dinner, try Chipotle Mexican Grill. Located in Shopper’s World (that’s the one where Office Depot, TJ Maxx, and DSW Shoes are located), it’s a place where the Route 9 crowd converges, from parents with toddlers to area workers looking for a quick bite. The concrete floors and hard, modern materials within mirror the concrete jungle outside, and loud but tuneful enough music keeps the vibe energetic and casual. I’ve been there three times in the past several weeks during the lunch rush and was greeted with a line that stretched to the door on each occasion. The staff moves it along, however, and some customers actually seemed dismayed that they didn’t get a chance to deal with all their texts and emails before it was suddenly their turn.
My favorite meal lately is a salad made up of a chopped romaine lettuce base topped with black beans, chicken, mild salsa, cheese, and guacamole. The menu informed me that the calorie count for my meal was 170 -780, so I was either really virtuous or a dieting train wreck. Last time, I made it through 3/4 of my meal, so I either consumed about 120 calories (great, I’ll be starving by 4:00 p.m.) or 600 calories (disaster, why did I agree to the guacamole?). If a salad isn’t what you’re after, the menu also includes burritos and tacos, each with equally inscrutable calorie counts.
Chipotle seems serious about bringing everybody to the table. They are zealous about accommodating people with dietary restrictions. The menu says, “We use no peanuts, tree nuts, or any other kind of nuts in our food.” If you are gluten-free, they are there to serve you. If you are dairy-free, they point out that only their cheese and sour cream contain dairy. Vegetarians can do well here, and even vegans have a fighting chance.
The view from my window-seat perch was nothing special, just that of my car parked under the blazing hot sun along with every other car carefully lined up in orderly rows, but there is a rather nice outside seating area, where I swear I felt a breeze as I left. Hey, it’s no McDonalds’s I thought as I left, patting myself on the back. Then I remembered. Doesn’t McDonald’s put out a tasty lobster roll this time of year? Maybe I’m not so high and mighty after all. Just might have to go see if I’m perhaps lovin’ it. DB
Kugel’s Deli 7/2013

Kugel’s Deli, located on Route 9 westbound in Trolley Square, bills itself as a New York style deli, and serves breakfast all day. My dining companion and I tried them out on a weekday for lunch. The cozy dining area was serving everyone from business people tapping away on their laptops to grandmas pushing their walkers.
The bacon cheeseburger with fries, $7.99, disappeared quickly and was pronounced good. I was less satisfied with my order, an open-faced grilled caprese sandwich on whole wheat ($5.99). The bread looked like it had spent the briefest of spells in the toaster and the tomato was just your regular supermarket-in-February variety rather than the high-summer kind it should have been, given that it was July.
But why did I go and order such fanciness at a New York-style deli anyway, when what I should have been trying out was the pastrami or the reuben or something? Because they sent me in that direction, that’s why. Sure you can get knishes or matzo ball soup there, but the fact is, a third of the menu is devoted to wraps and other items a true New York deli would scoff at.
So although Kugel’s bills itself as one thing, they are actually devoting much of their energy to a palate that doesn’t generally make room for whitefish salad.
Sure, we’d try it again. But next time I would ignore the specials board and go for the real deli experience.
