Wellesley Police log: Mystery purchases, lost elderly people, money missing from desk drawer
Wellesley Police Log for the Week of Feb. 19-25
Incidents
On February 19, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. Officer Wall spoke with a male party at the police station regarding identity fraud. The reporting party stated a credit card for Guitar Center was opened using his personal information in January. He had contacted the financial institution that issued the card and advised them that he had not opened an account. They closed the account and mailed him a fraud affidavit which required a police report. There are no suspects and no financial loss to the reporting party.
On February 20, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. Officer DeBernardi was dispatched to the police station to assist an elderly male party who was lost and could not recall where he lived. Officer DeBernardi was able to locate a phone number of family member who came to the police station.
On February 21, 2018 at 10:40 a.m. Officer R. Poirier was dispatched to the area of Dover Road and Benvenue Street to assist Officer Hughes with a lost elderly male party. The male party was able to advise the officers of the family members that he lived with and that he resided in Natick. Contact was made with a family member who responded.
On February 21, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. Officer DeBernardi was dispatched to the police station to speak with a male reporting party about identity theft. The reporting party stated that an unknown individual had attempted to purchase furniture from a store based in New York. The store contacted the reporting party due to the different shipping and billing addresses. The reporting party indicated that he had not made the purchase and was advised that the individual that ordered the furniture had a TD Bank card with his name on it. He contacted TD Bank who advised that an account had been opened and they closed the account. There has been no financial loss and he was provided with an identity theft victim resources packet.
On February 22, 2018 at 9:38 a.m. Officer R. Poirier spoke with a male party at the police station who indicated his air miles had been stolen in October. He stated he has 80,000 miles valued at $2,360 that were taken from his account on October 13, 2017. He provided Officer Poirier with a booking reference number and two names that appeared on the booking. He had reported it to the airline who indicated that they were looking into it.
On February 22, 2018 at 2:28 p.m. Officer Cunningham was dispatched to a business on Worcester Street for a report of a white van that had been parked in the lot for more than 30 days. Officer Cunningham queried the registration number and learned that the vehicle had not been reported stolen. He contacted the owner of the vehicle that indicated that it was a spare fleet vehicle and they would arrange to have it towed from the property.
On February 23, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. Officer Carrasquillo spoke to a female reporting party who wished to report a violation of a harassment prevention order via email. Officer Carrasquillo reviewed the parameters of the harassment prevention order and advised the reporting party that criminal charges would be filed.
On February 23, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. Officer Wall spoke with two residents who reside in an apartment on Washington Street. They indicated that money was taken from a desk drawer sometime between February 21, 2018 and February 23, 2018. The reporting party stated that a friend from New Hampshire had asked if he and two friends could stay with her overnight on February 21, 2018 and that she believed they may have been responsible for taking the money. Officer Wall is investigating.
On February 23, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. Officer Carrasquillo was dispatched to a Roche Bros. Supermarket on Linden Street for a report of an elderly female who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease who had been food shopping with a family member and wandered off. Officers began looking for the female party and were notified a short time later that another family member had located her at a restaurant on Linden Street and had driven her home. Officer Carrasquillo responded to the home and verified that the female party was home safe.
On February 24, 2018 at 7:20 p.m. Officer Dixon was dispatched to the area of Wall Street and Linden Street for a report of a stolen iPhone that was indicating on the “Find my Phone” application that it was in the area. The male reporting party indicated that he had been playing basketball at the Boston Sports Club around 6:45 p.m. and had left his phone on a nearby bench. He stated when he finished playing basketball he noticed that his phone was no longer on the bench. He utilized the “Find my Phone” application which brought him to that location. Officer Dixon called the phone number to see if it would ring and the reporting party indicated that it appeared that the phone was now shut off as the location was no longer available. Officer Dixon is investigating.
Arrests
On February 24, 2018 at 6:56 p.m. Officer DeBernardi observed a Honda sedan go through a red light from Washington Street to Worcester Street westbound crossing over the eastbound lanes of travel and stopping half way across to wait for a break in the traffic. He began to observe the operation of the vehicle and noted that it traveled into breakdown lane and left travel lane at least 10 times. He had his window rolled down and could detect an odor of burning marijuana coming from the vehicle as well. He stopped the vehicle on Worcester Street near Westgate and spoke with the operator, and asked for his license and registration. The driver had difficulty opening the window to speak with Officer DeBernardi, admitted to taking prescribed medications, smoking marijuana and consuming alcohol earlier in the day. He agreed to take reasonable tests of balance and coordination to determine if he was able to safely drive his motor vehicle. He took and failed four tests. He was taken into custody, transported to the station, booked in the usual manner, afforded all rights and later released on personal recognizance.
